I am a reporter with a unique beat. I use my understanding of planetary cycles to provide advance notice and analysis on the Zeitgeist of the day. If you have ever wondered “why is this happening now,” my insights will transform your experience of the headlines, adding new meaning and understanding. Call it Astrology for News Junkies. If you’re curious to know why the Impossible Burger is trending…or why the outcome of the 2019 Israeli elections was likely to be a shocker …or why “Woodrow Wilson, Stud Muffin” was a New York Times headline in December 2013, you will find it here, in over a decade’s worth of historical research and reporting.
Note that I do use astrological jargon in The Forecast in my effort to show how the planetary patterns are reflected in mundane events. I explain what the jargon symbolizes, so that all who want to understand the connections between astrology and the news may do so. However, I do not use astrological jargon in personal consultations, just plain English.

Monday 3/1/2021: Sneak Peek at the Week; Marching on March
/in The ForecastRabbit, rabbit!!
And how was your Full Moon in Virgo weekend? Did you get everything organized? That’s what I found myself doing around the house, no doubt supported by last Wednesday’s trine between Mars (action!) and Pluto (extreme). Midnight or not, that was the time to deep-clean the kitchen and finally put away the Christmas ornaments hanging on the potted palm tree. You?
The start of this work week is driven by the Moon in Libra, seeking fairness and balance in relationships. Also of influence: ONLY TWO patterns among the planets this week that do not include the Moon. On Wednesday, Venus forms a cooperative alignment (a sextile) with rebel Uranus, facilitating the greatest good for the greatest number, based on soulful understanding. On Thursday, we’ll have the third and final in a series of meet-ups (conjunctions) between Mercury (ideas/communication) and Jupiter (BIG) in Aquarius, facilitating expansive news in law, travel, education, religion, technology and publishing/broadcasting — with an innovative and/or humanitarian spin.
Here’s how the week goes:
Major patterns for the rest of March are:
How do the patterns of March compare to the patterns of January and February? First, the majority of them are “soft,” as opposed to “hard.” There’s an easier flow of energy. Second, there are no exact contacts among the outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto). Of those outer planets, Neptune (vision, ideals) is the most active, engaging with Sun, Mercury and Venus — and it’s moving at maximum speed. We don’t see too much tension involving the heavier planets (Uranus and Pluto) until the last two weeks of April.
Meanwhile, for the record, Saturday’s Full Moon in Virgo was exact at 3:17 AM ET. If you have a planet around 8 degrees of Virgo, Pisces, Sagittarius or Gemini, you’re more personally affected. Note that 8 Virgo makes a square to the lunar eclipse we had on November 30th.
Observations:
And now, the news.
Thursday’s cooperative connection (sextile) between the Sun and Uranus suggested innovative leadership and unconventional alliances, with the upside potential being a humanitarian/inclusive spin.
“Equality Act: US House passes legislation protecting LGBT rights”
“Mr. Potato Head Is Rebranding As Simply ‘Potato Head’ To Be More Inclusive”
Wednesday’s trine between Mars and Pluto suggested extremes in matters involving cars, aggression and men (especially men behaving badly). It also suggests “news from underground” and/or corruption exposed in Mars-related matters. Mars was conjunct the fixed star Algol, which adds a “losing one’s head” element to an already debilitated Mars. Avid Readers will recall that Algol is considered to be a most unfortunate — and potentially violent — celestial influence, especially when conjunct Mars. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has this in her horoscope, and as her daughter Christine famously stated, Speaker Pelosi can “cut off your head before you even know it.”
In other– much lighter — news, the NYT style section paid tribute to the Mars-Pluto trine with “How We Worked Out”. Those were the days!

Monday 2/22/2021: Sneak Peek at the Week; Saturn Square Uranus in the News
/in The ForecastGood morning!
Mercury is now direct, as of Saturday at 7:51 PM ET. Take it slow as you move about the country, accommodating Mercury as it slowly gets back up to speed. Mercury changed station at 11 degrees of Aquarius. The corresponding Sabian Symbol is “people on stairs graduated upwards,” — and that is Mercury’s focus Feb 17 – 25. It’s an apt support for last Wednesday’s Saturn-Uranus square, as it suggests (says Blain Bovee) “social advancement in the wake of an old order; opportunities for rising up while the prevailing order is setting down like the evening sun.” Cue the opening number from Hamilton, now, please.
No sleeping in today. The Cancer Moon is focused on creating and maintaining emotional/family/homeland security. If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.
Here’s how the week goes:
And now, the news.
Told ya it would be quite a week, and it was. Dominant headlines were disruptive, ground-breaking, network-focused — reflecting the first of 2021’s three squares between Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus. It was anticipated that we’d see a clash of the old guard vs. the avant garde — with the latter likely to prevail.
On Wednesday, Rush Limbaugh died. Politicians who arguably would never have risen in the ranks without Limbaugh’s vitriol were quick to honor his passing (e.g., George W. Bush, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and P45). As this obit from a local NBC affiliate in Florida notes, Limbaugh is credited with facilitating the Republican takeover of Congress in 1994.
I remember stumbling across Limbaugh’s TV show in the 90s, and caught him comparing 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton to a dog. His live studio audience (all wearing navy blazers and ties), found it hilarious. Limbaugh was also famous for denying that smoking causes cancer (he was diagnosed with lung cancer last year), and for tearing families apart (if you haven’t seen Jen Senko‘s documentary The Brainwashing of My Dad, you simply must). Limbaugh leaves behind a horoscope worth studying. It’s interesting that his entrance and exit happened on a Saturn-Uranus square.
Meanwhile, in Texas…
I knew that the Texas power grid was intentionally not in compliance with federal regulations, but until this week I did not realize that most of it is completely separate from two other grids that power the rest of the mainland states. Did you? With Saturn in Aquarius, power and control will be held by the ones with the strongest networks — of electricity, of funding, of friends, etc. Uranus in Taurus squaring Saturn reflects a shocking test of the integrity of our power and support networks.
Texas — with the exception of a few border cities (e.g., El Paso, which draws its power from one of the networks that supplies the western part of the U.S.) — failed the test. It seems that the Lone Star State’s self-contained power grid was created to benefit investors (the few), not customers (the masses). Greater value was placed on profit over preparedness (e.g., not winterizing equipment because of cost). Was it worth it? Ask Texas customers who are now facing monthly electric bills in the low five-figures, and pity those whose bank accounts were automatically debited.
Uranus in Taurus suggests a potential awakening in Taurus affairs; e.g., money, values, possessions, Earth. Astrologer Bill Herbst’s latest essay addresses the value we place on money vs. principles, and how that affects our lives. Food for thought!
The Texas crisis prompted the following responses from assorted politicians:
CancunHouston to offer further assistance — and naturally attracted a lot of attention, as her horoscope — like Cruz’s and Beto’s — has planets at the Aries Point. For her, it’s Mercury and Uranus, suggesting plenty of innovative ideas some find radical. But this is where we are at as a nation — and we see the dilemma in the U.S. horoscope. Do we want our government to create structures and enforce regulations that will keep everyone safe and secure, as our Moon in humanitarian Aquarius, along with Venus-Jupiter in Cancer would enjoy? Or do we want to live like that Texas mayor who told his constituents they were on their own — with no heat, light or water? That’s what the U.S. Cancer Sun might get, squared by heavy Saturn in Libra. Self-reliance is a virtue. You want food and shelter? Work for it. What’s wrong with that?
And now, an assortment of other headlines reflecting:
Ready?
In other news…
UPDATE: on President Biden, who had a ton of action in his horoscope Feb 17-19, including the third and final opposition of Neptune (vision/wipeout/scandal) to his Midheaven (professional status). Also, the Saturn-Uranus square made contact with his Pluto. Reflecting one potential of Neptune, it was interesting to note that earlier this month, Hunter Biden’s memoir about his battle with addiction got a publication date. On Friday, a Newsmax anchor tore a page from Limbaugh’s book, as he and two “historians” lobbed insults at another Biden family member: Champ, their 12-year-old German Shepherd.
Otherwise, this week has been a whirlwind of action. Biden opted for the vision/healing potential of Neptune at a Town Hall on CNN. His Taurus Moon, which needs to calm people down and make them feel secure, was in top form. I’m grateful to Heather Cox Richardson for keeping a list of everything else he did, e.g., telling allies at the Munich Security Conference that “America is back;” re-opening the Obamacare health exchanges from now until May 15th; expanding production and distribution of vaccines to stop the pandemic that has now killed 500,000 of us. The Washington Post is also keeping close track in a section on its website called “First 100 Days.” The driving force of innovation, determination and expansion aptly reflects patterns in the horoscope of Biden’s inauguration: Mars-Uranus on the Taurus Ascendant, square to Jupiter, Saturn and Sun in Aquarius.
Some are starting to compare Biden to Franklin Delano Roosevelt. How fascinating that FDR was an Aquarius driven by the Moon in nurturing Cancer. His horoscope has three planets in Aquarius (including the Sun) and four in Taurus, many of which are activated by current patterns. The horoscope lives forever, doncha’ know. FDR is hot!
UPDATE: on P45 (because I told you last week would be significant). He had the first of a series of three oppositions to Venus from Pluto, exact on February 18th. The next two are July 10 and Dec 25, and the latter coincides with the third Saturn-Uranus square. Another pattern: an opposition between Saturn and Pluto, exact March 16, August 4 and Dec 13. Another one: transiting Neptune will square his Gemini Sun and Sagittarius Moon multiple times this year and next. The first exact hit is March 26. Possible themes: erasure, addictions, alternative realities, glamour, victimization, scandal, mystics, martyr, vision. These are not fun patterns, as seen by last week:
We anticipate aggression and/or attacks on or from him in matters of courts, publishing and foreign affairs on Feb 22 (update: SCOTUS ruled that NY could have his taxes); Feb 26 (he’ll be speaking at CPAC) and March 3 (rallies are planned on March 4).
It is prudent to track his horoscope for now, because he was not convicted at his impeachment trial. Some lawmakers still persist in touting The Big Lie — i.e., that Biden is not our legitimately-elected President, as Steve Scalise did yesterday on the Tee Vee. This is concerning, given that the Mars-Neptune square in the U.S. horoscope is activated by Neptune this year. Avid Readers will recall that this Mars-Neptune square reflects our nation’s belief in the American Dream, along with our idealization (Neptune) of war and guns (Mars). It’s also our opioid addiction (Mars square Neptune may surrender to a beautiful escape), our evangelicals (Mars is a crusader; Neptune is spiritual), and our film industry. Mars-Neptune patterns can suggest fanatical beliefs, and the current Neptune transits suggest we– as a nation — are more susceptible to that potential than usual. The upside potential would be inspiring, healing vision — and peace. I’ll drink to that!
Here’s a post from 2020, with more on the U.S. Mars-Neptune square and what happened the last time it was under the influence of transiting Neptune in 1979.

Tuesday 2/16/2021: Late Sneak Peek at a Short Work Week; Saturn-Uranus Square #1
/in The ForecastAllllllrighty then!
What a week it was — and what a week it shall be.
Moon is in Aries, where it’s been since 10:53 AM ET on Saturday. Its fiery initiative combined with Mercury retrograde, is a fitting pattern for charging around the house to REorganize, or blasting through your emails to REview, REconnect and toss out what no longer serves.
Here’s how this short work week goes:
Let’s talk about that Saturn-Uranus square.
Saturn represents necessary controls, such as authority, the limits of time, responsibility, and ambition. We need Saturn’s structure to exist in the material world; without it we’d be living in a field without a roof over our heads. Uranus represents the intensely disruptive energy of change, lightning bolts, seismic shake-ups, genetic mutations and awakenings. If you have a Saturn-Uranus square in your horoscope, there is a suggestion of tension between the need to fulfill perceived obligations and maintain control vs. a need to break free of it all. That tension may persist for years, but eventually, the pressure for innovation and change wins the day.
Uranus briefly entered Taurus in 2018, backed into Aries and then re-entered Taurus in early 2019. Since then we’ve seen its disruptive energy reflected by shake ups in Taurus-ruled concerns: our values and possessions in general; earth beneath our feet; the concept of ownership; retail, money, beauty, restaurant (food) and real estate businesses, as I told you it would at the end of 2017. We’ve also seen a disruption of a material comfort we took for granted for far too long, i.e., human touch. I can’t believe I wrote this in April 2019 as a coda to an analysis of Joe Biden’s horoscope (he has Moon at 0 Taurus). It’s amazing how it has played out:
Saturn dipped into Aquarius last March for a few months, backed into Capricorn over the summer and re-entered Aquarius last December. It suggests the advancement of necessary controls (this is how my teacher Noel Tyl described the need of Saturn) applied to matters of Taurus using the intellectually innovative methods of Aquarius: technology, rebels from the fringe; the power of the collective (as opposed to a corporation), humanitarianism, diversity, social significance, friendships, networks. And here we are now, gathered together on Zoom, with efforts now being made to control/regulate what had been a wild frontier of cyberspace.
Uranus represents the energy of awakening — with a shock to the system. Saturn represents the reality of the material world. When Saturn/reality is in a hard aspect with Neptune (fog/deception/idealism), as it was in 2006-2007 and 2015-2016, we get magical thinking and bubbles. The last time Saturn and Uranus were in a hard aspect (conjunction, square or opposition), was late 2008-2010. Anyone remember any bubbles bursting back then (e.g. mortgage crisis & auto bailout)? They say history repeats itself — and so do planetary cycles.
Many bubbles are likely to pop in 2021. The dates of the three Saturn-Uranus squares are Feb 17, Jun 15 and Dec 24. In 2022, we do not have an exact square, but Saturn and Uranus will still be in a tense pattern, especially in the fall.
Back to the forecast for the week:
And now, the news.
Let’s start with a list of several headlines reflecting last week’s major planetary patterns. If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve seen many of these as they hit the wires:
Meanwhile, I’ve been anticipating disruptions and further separations in the lives of Britain’s Royal Family:
UPDATE: on Claudia Conway — the social media sensation and would-be emancipated daughter of Kellyanne and George. Claudia’s 24 Libra Sun was hit hard in 2020 by Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Pluto and (goddess of discord) Eris. Pluto continues to square her Sun, suggesting that — having made a ton of noise last year — she would continue to attract prominence (i.e., fame) because Pluto is not done with her just yet. Looking at her horoscope last year, I thought she might prevail in her declared bid for emancipation. Are we surprised that she appeared on American Idol over the weekend? Eh…not really. Plus, transiting Jupiter (expansion) conjoined her Neptune (glamour, music, fantasy, victim, fog) last week.
Britney Spears is also making a bid for emancipation, apparently — though I confess I have not thoroughly read the stories. The NYT made a documentary, “Framing Britney Spears,” that’s now playing on Hulu. A quick glance at her horoscope, and instantly we see Pluto at play here, too — squaring her Venus-Pluto square. We anticipate extremes, breakdown and eventual empowerment in matters of her self and financial worth — after quite a struggle.
Best Mercury Rx snafu so far — and boy did we need this laugh:
There’s much to be said about last week’s impeachment trial. Part of that exercise involves reviewing the flow of planetary patterns over the past several years, in order to understand how the United States got to this point in its development, and why the 2022 midterms are so critical to the survival of our democratic process. That’s what I plan to do in the next forecast. If I start writing that part now, this current forecast won’t ship until tomorrow; until I can get to it, here’s Heather Cox Richardson with the latest from her non-astrological historical perspective.

Monday 2/8/2021: Sneak Peek at the Week; New Moon in Aquarius; Venus in the News
/in The ForecastArise, go forth and make it happen. That’s the drive of the Moon in Capricorn, where it’s been since Sunday at 3:51 PM ET…and where it will be until Tuesday at 8:20 PM ET. This proactive drive is enabled by the stubborn endurance of Mars in Taurus, as Moon and Mars will be in a trine (harmony) at 9:21 PM ET. Whether this is a positive or destructive enabling remains to be seen.
Last week, Venus (money, values, women, art) was the star player; this week, it’s Mercury making the most connections with the other kids in the sandbox. Today at 8:47 AM ET, Mercury — still retrograde — met up with the Sun, suggesting a need to rethink what is already a rethought strategy (Mercury is retrograde). Watch the headlines; see what emerges. The rest of the week goes like this:
Observations:
Back to the forecast for the week:
And now, the news.
If it feels as if things are moving faster than warp speed, there are astrological correlations. All planets except Mercury are direct in motion, and all are moving faster than their average speeds, especially Jupiter and Saturn, Keeping up with the news is an eternal game of Whack-a-Mole.
Last week’s meet-up of Venus and Saturn in Aquarius, followed by Venus’ square to Uranus suggested heavy and disruptive headlines involving women, arts, money and social expression:
However, Jupiter’s action in a horoscope is no guarantee of good fortune. Jupiter is expansion, for better or worse. I was saddened to read that beloved philanthropist Captain Sir Tom Moore, the centenarian who raised millions for the UK’s National Health Service in 2020, passed away last week — from Covid. Transiting Jupiter was opposing his natal Jupiter-Neptune conjunction and squaring his Taurus Sun. Neptune can refer to infections. Jupiter’s expansive energy here was not helpful. Here is a write-up of his horoscope, published last year.
Meanwhile…
When Mercury is retrograde, it’s not unusual to hear from people you haven’t seen in years — or find a missing object lost long ago, as in:
Finally, remember this prediction from last week’s forecast?
…and here’s the bawdy and wacky Zillow ad SNL created. It’s generating a ton of buzz!

More snow is on the way!
Monday 2/1/2021: Sneak Peek at the Week; Astrology for February
/in The ForecastRabbit, rabbit!
By the time you read this, the snow falling on parts south and west should have made its way north to NYC. A snow day — or two — would be expected to disrupt travel, but with Mercury retrograde, you can put any delays to good use. Have you been reviewing your progress since the last Mercury retrograde, which ended in November? Are you reconnecting with past projects, friends and colleagues? Or are you just chilling out?
Chilling may be challenge on Monday morning, given the square between physical Mars and the Sun. At 6:25 AM ET, Moon enters Libra, seeking smooth things over with a focus on fairness and balance in relationship. At 9:05 AM ET, Venus leaves Capricorn for Aquarius, where values, money, social expression and art need to be less concerned about climbing ladders of status and success; more concerned with being accessible to all.
As we move through this week and next, Venus will make contact with Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter and Mercury (twice). Thus we’ll see a lot of headlines about who, what and how we need to love — and why we need to be more ambitious, innovative and expansive with our aesthetic ideals. The markets should be interesting to watch.
For today, the Libra Moon’s people-pleasing drive is well-supported. Go about your business — but triple check the fine print and wiring instructions.
Meanwhile…
Avid Reader Stephanie wants to know if I am offering a few paragraphs of personal insights on what this Mercury retrograde means in your own personal horoscope. And yes, since Avid Reader Stephanie asked, I would be delighted to. Toss $46 into my Cosmic Tip Jar — as a Joyful Random Expression of Appreciation — and email me your birth data — time, place and date — if I don’t already have it. I will send you my thoughts in a day or two.
As for the rest of February, major highlights include:
And now, the news.
I have been resisting joining the scores of astrologers looking at what we know about the horoscope of gun-toting Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. She’s been all over the news, and especially during last week’s emotionally extreme Venus-Pluto conjunction and potentially fringe-to-the-max Sun-Jupiter-Uranus square. If you still don’t know who I’m talking about, here’s the cold open from the weekend’s season premiere of SNL. Comedy is a coping strategy for pain.
Anyhoo, Greene made news last week when dozens of social media posts from the past came to light. There she was stalking and harassing a teenage David Hogg (survivor of a deadly school shooting in Parkland, FL); there she was declaring that the California wildfires were caused by “Jewish space lasers.” This week, Congresswoman Cori Bush moved her office away from Greene’s because she and her staff were being harassed by the “mask-less” staff of MTG. Apparently there is no HR department in Congress, and Greene was rewarded for her specialness with an assignment on the House Education Committee (she believes the Parkland shooting and 911 were hoaxes).
The scandal no one is talking about (says Ryan Calo on Twitter), is how Space Force missed the giant laser pointed at California.
Naturally, astrologers were curious to know what was going on in Greene’s horoscope — not that we really had to look. We already know — based on her words and deeds — what we’re going to find. She has a bewildering sense of self and her place in the world, right? Sun-Neptune opposition. She is reckless, disruptive and a fierce advocate for guns and violence. She appears to have funded her campaign in part with Covid relief funds. Mars in a t-square with Venus-Uranus, supercharged last year. Her Mars is in Cancer. Her actions need to support emotional/home security. She has Venus in Aries. She needs a crusade. This need is supercharged in 2021. She has one pattern in common with Speaker Nancy Pelosi: an exact square between Saturn and Pluto, which suggests extremes of ambition and discipline. Born on May 27, 1982 in Milledgeville, GA, Greene is a Gemini, probably with Moon in drama queen Leo. Current patterns in her horoscope suggest extreme efforts based on likely unreasonable plans and — according to astrologer Noel Tyl, “nefarious scheming to exalt the ego.”
Unpleasant as it may be, I feel we need to stay focused on politics, if we are seriously interested in preserving the democratic ideals set forth in the Declaration of Independence and in our Constitution. In her latest post, historian Heather Cox Richardson addresses the divide within the Republican party — and between so-called “business Republicans” and Democrats. She explains how — having been voted out of power by the people, Republicans in assorted state legislatures are now trying to make it even harder for the people to vote. With these recent developments, we can see how the stress in the U.S. horoscope is likely to manifest in real life over the next two years.
In other news (reflecting planetary patterns, especially today’s square between warrior/macho Mars and the Sun):
Reflecting the “pocket full of posies” (defense against the plague) symbolized by the Sabian Symbol for the current Mercury retrograde (see the last forecast), the NYT published an extremely lengthy and detailed piece that answered all questions about the Covid vaccine!
UPDATE: on the former WH Occupant — and only because I wrote in a prior forecast that we’d see notable action in his horoscope on the 27th and through that week. Transiting Mars and Jupiter activated his Pluto (power and resources); we’d expect extremes — possibly pushing his luck at great loss. Late Friday, it was announced that five of his defense attorneys quit. His new lawyers are apparently better-equipped to handle the case, given that their combined experience includes defending “alleged” mobsters, advising Jeffrey Epstein and declining to prosecute convicted sexual predator Bill Cosby. The impeachment trial is scheduled to start on February 9th — will there be a Mercury retrograde delay? I don’t know, but the next big date to watch is February 18, when Pluto opposes his Venus (professional status; siblings; communication) for the first of three passes. Meanwhile, February 17-19 are dates to watch for President Biden.
In closing….
…the snow is now falling heavily in NYC and the city is closed for the day. Yay! If you’re in the mood for a show, I recommend In & Of Itself. It premiered last month on Hulu, and all I knew when I watched it on the 22nd was that Stephen Colbert produced it, Frank Oz directed it, and that it addressed questions of “identity.” And since astrology has a lot to say about questions of identity, i.e., why you are the way you are, I just had to check it out. I don’t want to tell you anything more other than 1) just watch it; and 2) there are moments in this show when people feel truly seen — and these moments are quite empowering. If you don’t subscribe to Hulu, you can get a free trial for 30 days.
Thank you for reading this forecast. Here’s the 411 on personal consultations. Here’s how to support the work it takes to bring you these insights via email once or twice a week. Avid Reader Diane tells me that I simply must include this message every time I write, and since she has a black belt in aikido, resistance is futile.
