I am a reporter with a unique beat. I use my understanding of planetary cycles to provide advance notice and analysis on the Zeitgeist of the day. If you have ever wondered “why is this happening now,” my insights will transform your experience of the headlines, adding new meaning and understanding. Call it Astrology for News Junkies. If you’re curious to know why the Impossible Burger is trending…or why the outcome of the 2019 Israeli elections was likely to be a shocker …or why “Woodrow Wilson, Stud Muffin” was a New York Times headline in December 2013, you will find it here, in over a decade’s worth of historical research and reporting.
Note that I do use astrological jargon in The Forecast in my effort to show how the planetary patterns are reflected in mundane events. I explain what the jargon symbolizes, so that all who want to understand the connections between astrology and the news may do so. However, I do not use astrological jargon in personal consultations, just plain English.

Astro-logical Forecast for Tuesday 7/3/2012: Full Moon in Capricorn, Anderson Cooper & Julian Assange
/in The ForecastCould be a rollicking morning as the Moon, now in “make-it-happen” Capricorn squares off against rebel Uranus at 8:45AM ET. A surprise, a flash of insight — or some other disruption of the status quo? Add to this the potentially combustible entry of the Red Planet, Mars, in peace-seeking Libra at 8:32AM ET. OK, pop quiz to those of you who have been reading the forecast diligently for some months. What is significant about the beginning of Libra (and Aries, Cancer and Capricorn)? Can you remember? That’s right — zero degrees of Libra is at the Aries Point, a place in the zodiac of special significance or prominence, also suggesting a turning point. So with Mars in Libra at the Aries Point, we can expect assertions of will (Mars) — perhaps even related to a relationship (for better or for worse) — expressed to the public. Keep an eye out for such events from July 1-8.
The Moon reaches exact fullness at 2:52PM ET at 12 Cancer/Capricorn. What do the Sabian Symbols reveal? For the Sun, “one hand slightly flexed with a very prominent thumb”; for the Moon “a fire worshipper”. How interesting to see the word “prominent” echoed in a chart with Mars at the prominent Aries Point. And how interesting that Mars refers to willpower…and in palmistry, an inflexible thumb suggests someone with a stubborn will. Accentuating the thumb — with a ring, for example — is usually an indication of anger issues. We become angry when we perceive that our will is thwarted or otherwise blocked. Anger is another keyword related to Mars.
For “a fire worshipper”, Blain Bovee points out that fire is “the active phase of combustion of passion and spirit”. I think of flames of desire…which is another expression of willpower. OK. So. Building on your New Moon agenda from two weeks ago, in which it was suggested that you fine tune your patterns of thought and communication so that they are aligned with what you really want…now we have a cosmic green light to release (the Full Moon is about release) what you want to the Universe, so that it may manifest. Blain Bovee writes: “…look for characteristics of resolve, conviction, inner strength; or inflexibility; unyielding in one’s stance; fixed in one’s beliefs”.
Well, OK. What do you want? Can you articulate it clearly and precisely? I raise this question because it has been brought to my attention via more than one source in recent weeks, and with every source saying the same thing, I will share it with you. Somewhere, years ago — I read in Eckhardt Tolle’s book, The Power of Now…or maybe it was Conversations With God…or maybe it was Illusions, by Richard Bach (all great books about how the world is quick to respond to our words and thoughts, which is how we create our reality on this Big Blue Marble)…and what I read was this: the Universe — or whatever it is that turns our thoughts into reality has an odd way of agreeing with whatever you think or say. If you are thinking, “I am no good; I am not qualified to get that job”, the Universe will find ways to agree with you. If you are thinking horrible thoughts about someone, that person will be more likely to act horribly to you. But if someone has a reputation for acting horribly and you begin thinking of them as “lovely and talented,” for example, you will be more likely to have a positive experience with them.
Eliminating negatives such as “don’t” and “can’t” are also key in manifesting desire. Thinking, “oh, geez, I don’t want to be late,” when you are trapped in a stalled subway train on your way to an important meeting is less effective than thinking, “somehow I’ll get there on time”. In fact, consider eliminating the word “want” from your list of wants, as in “I want to be earning more money” or “I want to attract my soulmate”. Why? Because the Universe is likely to agree with your statement…and leave you wanting! This is why affirmations are stated as an “active positive”, as in, “I am attracting my soulmate” or “I am generating more income”, so that the response may be a huge statement of YES, YOU ARE!
OK — in the news, Anderson Cooper shocks…well, not so many people…with a simple statement that he is gay, always has been and is very happy about it, thank you very much. What is interesting from an astro-logical point of view is that the timing of this statement is perfectly reflected in the horoscope. Mr. Cooper was born June 3, 1967 at 3:46PM in NY, NY. He’s a Gemini with Moon in Aries, Libra rising. He needs to be a pioneer, to inspire, to be first, to be courageous (Moon in Aries)– as he applies his Gemini Sun energy to being clever and informative. He is the personification of integrity in relationship (Libra rising) and his public image is one of sensitivity and caring (Cancer Midheaven), even in the most dangerous situations (Mars is on the Ascendant; Mr. Cooper has a long track record as a war correspondent, bringing us a behind-the-scenes perspective).
Mr. Cooper’s Mercury — relating to his mindset — has been going through a major transformation, courtesy of the Uranus-Pluto square, presumably leading to emancipation and empowerment (the cycle completes in December). As the New York Times article states (click the link in the preceding paragraph), “But his thinking changed over time…” Exactly! Meanwhile, Saturn, planet of structure has just crossed his 19 degrees of Libra rising for a third and final hit, suggesting a newly crystalized sense of identity after a period of releasing whatever no longer serves. Transiting Saturn is currently opposing his natal Moon at 23 Aries in the 7th house (the public) and squaring his Midheaven, suggesting an ambitious and/or major change of direction that is directly related to professional and/or family status. (Moon rules the Midheaven). So simple, so perfectly timed — bravo, Mr. Cooper!
Julian Assange is not so simple. A reader has requested some thoughts, so here they are. The current birth data of record is July 3, 1971 at 3PM in Townsville, Australia. Sun at 10 degrees of Cancer in the 8th house of “other peoples affairs”, squaring rebel Uranus (which also refers to technology & genius). Moon in Scorpio (needing to be seen as a person of depth and substance, gaining knowledge for the sake of power and control) is in the 12th house (working behind-the-scenes), ruling the 9th (internationalism and publishing). Ascendant is 2 degrees of scruffy Sagittarius, with natal Neptune and Jupiter on the Ascendant, opposed by restrictive Saturn on the cusp of the 7th (other people). Saturn rules the 3rd house, which refers to communication and knowledge. Jupiter is in Scorpio, ruling the 12th of the self-undoing and government institutions; this man needs to be on a mission, likely involving a leap of faith. Mars is in Aquarius opposing the Midheaven, suggesting he needs to be a rebel with a cause in areas related to homeland security, applied as a public service (Mars rules the 6th house of service).
Assange’s horoscope has been a hotbed of activity for some years now. In late 2010, when Wikileaks began releasing volumes of unclassified and classified U.S. diplomatic cables, ruthless Pluto and rebel Uranus were in challenging aspect to his Midheaven and Ascendant, suggesting upheaval, power plays and prominence. What’s going on in Assange’s horoscope right now? Last year, nebulous Neptune squared Jupiter, suggesting tricky legalisms in a chart that is already predisposed to weirdness in that arena. Neptune is squaring the Ascendant and Saturn, again pumping up the volume of weirdness and veil of mystery/confusion/illusion that is a natural part of Assange’s existence. If you’ve been following the Assange drama, a court in London declared he could be extradited to Sweden to face allegations of sexual assault. Somehow, Assange turned up in the embassy of Ecuador (surprise!), where he is seeking political asylum. Will he be granted asylum? I am not sure, but I do note a couple of strong positive measurements suggesting assistance and success, which are exact on July 18th and August 29th . Additionally, a geographic relocation is suggested — but the question is, to where? Looking at the astrocartography of his horoscope relocated Ecuador, it could certainly provide a refuge for an emancipated and empowered rebel. Still, there are strong forces that presumably would prefer to see him shipped off to Sweden. With Assange’s Sun at 10 Cancer about to be hit by the Uranus-Pluto square starting at the end of next year and continuing through 2013, I expect to see more dramatic stories of his (potential) emancipation and empowerment continuing through then.
Astro-logical Forecast for Monday 7/2/2012: Mars Leaves Virgo (Finally!)
/in The ForecastReady for another week of excitement? Well, here it comes…
You can bounce out of bed with Moon still in opinionated Sagittarius, supported by a constructive connection to disciplined Saturn at 7:08AM ET. That can help launch you into action — or at least a grounded philosophical discussion. Note Moon goes void at 6:21PM ET on a challenge from aggressive Mars in perfectionist Virgo, so try to engage your brain before flying off the handle because you’re finding fault with the way someone decided to get things done.
Speaking of Mars, today is the last full day of Mars in Virgo, where it has been all year long — and feeling like since forever before that. Is your work routine now perfected? Is your life completely organized? How about your office? Your diet? Your workout routine? Good, because when Mars enters Libra at 8:32AM ET on Tuesday, we can apply our assertive energy to bringing our perfected work to the public. Or focus it on a relationship. We’ll be working towards fairness, justice, equality and being appreciated. Being balanced will become more of a priority than being perfectly efficient and organized.
Moon enters “make it happen” Capricorn at 6:51PM ET, with all of that proactive, authoritative energy building to emotional fullness at 2:52PM ET on Tuesday. Hmmm…another Full Moon…that’ll be the topic for tomorrow’s forecast. That, and Julian Assange…by special request.
Voids of note for the week: Wednesday July 4th 8:25AM – 8:26PM ET — good thing it’ll be a holiday in the US. Also: Friday 11:48AM ET – 12:29AM ET Saturday.
And now, the news. As anticipated, we saw some big break-ups in the headlines on Friday. Break-up #1: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are divorcing. We don’t have an exact birth time for Cruise, but Katie Holmes was born on December 18, 1978 at 9:32PM in Toledo Junction, OH. In March we see the last of three exact hits by rebel Uranus (which rules her house of partnerships) to her natal Mars (willpower), suggesting a need for freedom in self-expression, matters relating to children and in matters of the higher mind (e.g., religion, law and other belief systems). Also in March we see ruthless Pluto making a challenging aspect to the area of her horoscope relating to her home and family, as well as personal identity. Thus we anticipate a transformation or breakdown leading to empowerment. Isn’t that interesting? Finally: another measurement (solar arc Sun = ASC, for the students and pros reading this), suggesting being seen for who one truly is — and that was exact on May 30th. No surprise at all that the divorce was filed by Holmes, not by Cruise. .
Break-up #2: Dominique Strauss-Kahn, whose horoscope we have been following for over a year in this forecast (in the archives here and here and here), has separated from his wife, according to a French tabloid. DSK just experienced the second hit of ruthless Pluto to his Midheaven, which suggests a major change in areas of career and family status. However, this story is far from over, as more hits are in store through 2013. As the New York Times reported, the couple would neither confirm nor deny the tabloid’s story. They are, however, suing the tabloid. Stay tuned.
The point here is not to chatter mindlessly about celebrity couples going through difficult times. The point is to show how astrology can be used to help us understand phases of development and events that can happen in our own lives.
See you tomorrow!
Friday 6/29/2012 & the Weekend: the Supremes Rule; TGIF
/in The ForecastMoon entered the watery depths of Scorpio yesterday at 4:32PM ET, needing to be of substance and seeking knowledge for the sake of power and control. Add to this intensity a few more power plays and shocks to the system, suggested by ruthless Pluto and rebel Uranus challenging the Sun at 11AM ET and 4:11PM ET, respectively. How much more excitement can you stand (as if yesterday wasn’t enough — at least here in the US)? Watch the headlines.
In your own personal world, today you may well afford to make a power play or sudden move of your own. If so, you will be supported by a lovely connection between mental Mercury and expansive Jupiter at 11:39AM ET that is oh-so-very smart. Seriously. What’s on your mind? Got an idea you want to pitch? Or would you prefer to simply take action?
There are no exact aspects among the planets on Saturday, save for a couple of connections to the Moon…and the one we’re most likely to notice is a potentially dreamy/spacey challenge from nebulous Neptune at 10:55PM ET. Just who is that person you’re having dinner with, anyway? Are they really who they seem to be? By then the Moon will have moved into rowdy Sagittarius (as of 6:04PM ET), inspiring you to expand your mind and your horizons for the sake of a good time. Really, the Moon is delightfully supported by a series of pleasantries from 1:05AM to 7:52AM ET on Sunday…and then coasts through the rest of the day. Should be fun for our neighbors to the North who will be celebrating Canada Day. Huzzah!
OK, now for the news. You recall yesterday the Moon was void of course, suggesting a higher probability of crises that turn out to be much ado about nothing, correct? So in case you hadn’t heard, here are two screenshots from the good folks at Fox News and CNN, who were apparently so desperate to be the first to tell you how the Supreme Court ruled on the Affordable Care Act, that they just made stuff up. Epic Fails! And apparently some folks over at the White House believed what they saw on TV until actual professional journalists at other networks reported the facts. Blame the initial freak out and confusion on the void…
Having looked at the birth dates for the nine justices of the Supreme Court the night before (see yesterday’s forecast), we could anticipate that Chief Justice Roberts would be the one to watch — driving the action. Roberts is an Aquarius with Moon in Pisces (Jan 27 1955 — time unknown), but what reeeally jumps out right now is his Mars (action!) in pioneering Aries. It is directly impacted by the status quo-disrupting Uranus-Pluto square, suggesting success after tremendous energy applied and a dominance of will. The only question would be…what did Chief Justice Roberts want?
Well, surprise, surprise (and thanks to planetary patterns, we were sure there would be one). Not only did Roberts write the majority opinion himself, he broke ranks with his conservative colleagues. The status quo was disrupted, and in a 5-4 decision, the Affordable Care Act stands. We can expect more dynamic action from Chief Justice Roberts as Pluto and Uranus continue to supercharge his natal Mars through 2013. I’ll be verrrrry interested to see what’s going on in his life between November and February of 2013 — with December being the focal point for a particularly bold — and probably disruptive — shift (SA Pluto=Uranus, for the astrology pros reading this).
Then there was this shocking upset from yesterday: Rafael Nadal defeated at Wimbledon by an upstart! Note that sports matches that occur during Moon voids have a higher probability of victory for the underdog…
Have a great weekend — and keep those cards and letters coming : )
Astro-logical Forecast for Thursday 6/28/2012: Breaking Up is Hard to Do
/in The ForecastMoon in rational, fair-minded, relationship-oriented Libra goes void at 4:22AM ET on a serious, potentially ambitious or depressing (choose one and operate accordingly) hook-up with Saturn, setting the tone for the bulk of the day. I wrote that line last night — and at 2:30AM ET a story hit the NYT home page speculating that losses at JPMorgan Chase may reach $9 billion (up from the $2 billion that was reported on May 10, a few days before Venus — money, love, value — turned retrograde). Apparently there has been time to review the financial situation (reviewing is an excellent thing to do when planets are retrograde) — and it is interesting that today’s revised estimates of losses comes after Venus has just turned direct.
Back to today’s long Moon void: if you’re new to the forecast and aren’t familiar with Moon voids and how to manage them, click here. You’ll have until 4:32PM ET today to consciously experience what a void can feel like: odd twists and delays cropping up while trying to move in a straight line; crises that turn out to be much ado about nothing; a higher chance of people flaking out. Go with the flow — maybe even a creative flow — and resist the temptation to make an impulsive purchase that later proves useless.
In the background you may have been noticing — all week — an intense buzz. You may also have noticed traffic jams of all forms — why has it been so hard for people to just get where they need to go? To review the major action of the week: three planets either changed direction and/or sign, which requires a mental adjustment as we adapt to the new traffic flow. Patience! And there’s that square between Uranus and Pluto, which can’t help but disrupt the status quo.
On Friday, the Sun, now in the emotionally sensitive sign of Cancer, will be exactly opposed by ruthless Pluto and squared by rebel Uranus (at 11AM ET and 4:11PM ET), but certainly we’ve been feeling the supercharged potential for power plays and breakthroughs/break-ups of this pattern all week. If you were born a few days before the 30th of March, June, September or December, you have likely been feeling the intensity on a personal level. In the headlines, right now I’m seeing a break-up in Rupert Murdoch’s empire, as the New York Times heads to China. Meanwhile, life in parts of Colorado is being disrupted as a wildfire rages out of control.
We can anticipate more of the same over the next couple of days, as we await a Supreme Court ruling on the constitutionality of the Affordable Health Care Act presumably to be announced today…though with the Moon void of course, a delay is not 100% out of the picture. Just for fun, I took a look at the birthdays of all the Supreme Court justices. I immediately noticed that Chief Justice John G. Roberts has aggressive Mars in pioneering Aries — and that his dynamic, assertive will is being supercharged by the Uranus-Pluto square. Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin and JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon are two other newsmakers who have Mars activated by Uranus-Pluto right now. Compulsive forces at work in the promotion of personal agendas?
And now, a vintage song by Neil Sedaka, which popped into my head while I was thinking about a subhead for today’s forecast. Enjoy!
Astro-logical Forecast for Wednesday 6/27/2012: How to Find Out if the State Owes You Money (in honor of Venus turning direct)
/in The ForecastIn the Americas, the highly-charged lunar activity occurred while you were sleeping, with ruthless Pluto and disruptive Uranus challenging the Libra Moon’s need for balance and appreciation at 3:41AM and 3:53 AM ET, respectively. If you weren’t sleeping — say maybe you were a writer trying to finish an article on deadline, you might have been disrupted by the crash of your word processing program, which just might have obliterated your carefully crafted edits, leaving you to begin again from scratch. Really, it could happen.
Meanwhile, as promised, Venus — planet of social graces, love, money, women, copper and beauty — turns direct at 11:07AM ET. It’ll take until July 31st for Venus to go from where it is now — 7 degrees of Gemini — to get back where it was when Venus turned retrograde on May 16th (at 23 degrees of Gemini). Until then, we are still in “review mode” of wherever 7-23 Gemini falls in your horoscope.
If reviewing financial issues wasn’t on your list during Venus’s retrograde, here’s one last chance to see if you have a little cash stashed away that you didn’t even know you had. Ready? The National Association for Unclaimed Property Administrators can connect you to the Unclaimed Property Departments — usually run by the state comptrollers — of all 50 states — and some parts of Canada. Maybe there’s a paycheck someone sent you that you never received. Well, the state has your check — and it will send it to you if you ask. Check out the site and let me know if you hit pay dirt!
Speaking of labor and wages, the Sabian Symbol for Venus turning direct is “an industrial strike”. Which doesn’t strike me as holding much potential for social graces, as we would hope to see with Venus now moving forward. Of this degree Sabian Symbol guru Blain Bovee notes that when workers strike, they nearly always do so because of perceived social inequities (which, as you may recall from earlier posts this week, is a big theme of Saturn in Libra — what a coincidence). If labor and management can find a way to strike a balance, the work may continue. If no compromise can be reached, the response may be to strike a blow…or strike out in a whole new direction, if one of the parties in a dispute is feeling blocked. Venus will be on this degree until July 2nd. Let’s watch the headlines and see what manifests along the themes described above.
Heads up: Moon will be void from 4:23AM ET Thursday until 4:32PM ET. Get it off your desk today.
Fiinally: a housekeeping note — about the Sabian Symbols, for those interested in using them. Let’s say a planet — like Venus — is at 7 degrees of Gemini — where it is now. When we look up the symbol, we always read for the next degree — in this case, 8 Gemini — not 7! Think of it as rounding up to the next dollar. Any questions?
