I am a reporter with a unique beat. I use my understanding of planetary cycles to provide advance notice and analysis on the Zeitgeist of the day. If you have ever wondered “why is this happening now,” my insights will transform your experience of the headlines, adding new meaning and understanding. Call it Astrology for News Junkies. If you’re curious to know why the Impossible Burger is trending…or why the outcome of the 2019 Israeli elections was likely to be a shocker …or why “Woodrow Wilson, Stud Muffin” was a New York Times headline in December 2013, you will find it here, in over a decade’s worth of historical research and reporting.
Note that I do use astrological jargon in The Forecast in my effort to show how the planetary patterns are reflected in mundane events. I explain what the jargon symbolizes, so that all who want to understand the connections between astrology and the news may do so. However, I do not use astrological jargon in personal consultations, just plain English.

Saturday 12/31/2022: Essential Preparation for the New Year; Venus Enters Aquarius & Other Fun Stuff
/in The ForecastCounting down the hours…to the beginning of the New Year!
Here’s a recap of the weekend forecast:
As she does every year, Beth Owl’s Daughter presents a compendium of rituals and traditions to get 2023 off to a great start. This is not to be missed, and the visioning she encourages is well-supported by a lovely, rose-colored connection between Mercury (now retrograde in practical Capricorn) and Neptune, exact at 1:44 AM ET on…
Meanwhile…
Whitney and I are in Mercury retrograde review mode with respect to our podcast, Off the Charts: A Stellar Newscast. Check out Whitney’s fabulous show notes to find out what we’ve been up to over the holidaze, and you’ll be treated to what we hope will be a fun and informative video exchange. But wait — there’s more! We’ve posted another bonus for our patron subscribers, with much gratitude for your support.
Now is a fine time to make a plan for 2023 — with your astrologer. I’d be delighted to help your chart your course in a personal consultation. You may also find the written Your Year Ahead report helpful, if you’d like note certain planetary cycles in your calendar. Here’s the 411 on those offerings.
As for the news…
…gosh, there is so much out in the open now, and it’s perfectly in sync with the Sabian Symbol of the December 23rd New Moon. Not to mention the third hit of the U.S. Pluto Return — see previous link.
As always, Heather Cox Richardson has all the gory details — and links to sources — in her essential blog, Letters from an American. It’s a daily must-read, because those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it. TFG has the third hit of transiting Neptune square Sun on January 4th. A wipe-out would be an apt reflection.
Closing now…in haste…because the H.M.S. Pinafore is calling.
Happy fabulous New Year!
Thank you for reading this forecast.
Monday 12/26/2022: Sneak Peek at the Week; Mercury Retrograde Survival Guide; U.S. Pluto Return
/in The ForecastIt’s Monday — and a holiday, since Christmas fell on a Sunday. Whatever holiday you may — or may not — have been celebrating, I hope it was happy, merry and bright!
Mine was tinged with a bit of irony, as the heat in my building was out for most of the day and night…
…which was also the eighth night of Hanukkah.
Some thought we’d actually run out of oil.
Which isn’t how the story is supposed to go.
Here are the highlights of the week:
I was out of town last week — and ended up extending my stay away another two days. Thus, I didn’t post a detailed forecast for Friday’s New Moon in Capricorn, exact at 5:16 AM ET. Here is that chart, set in Washington, D.C.:
Observations:
As for this week:
A pause, while we discuss this Mercury retrograde.
Mercury will appear to move backwards in the sky at 24 degrees 21 minutes of Capricorn. It’s not really moving backwards, but that is how it looks from our perspective here on Spaceship Earth.
Mercury will travel backwards in Capricorn until January 18th. Mercury turns direct at 8 degrees of Capricorn. Mercury won’t cover new ground until February 7th, when it returns to 24 Capricorn. Mercury retrograde in Capricorn suggests a ton of discussion in matters of corporate and governmental authority and responsibility. There may be a notable quest for vision and innovation in these matters, and I say this because during this Mercury retrograde period (including Mercury’s shadow period), Mercury sextiles Neptune (vision; idealism) three times. Mercury is also in a series of trines with Uranus (innovation; technology).
The Sabian Symbol for this Mercury retrograde is “an oriental rug dealer,” which Sabian Sage Blain Bovee interprets as an opportunity to get oriented and/or take a stand. Somehow we’re likely to see these themes in the news. You are more personally affected by Mercury turning retrograde this week if you have planets or angles at 24 degrees of Capricorn, Aries, Cancer or Libra. Note that the United States has its Mercury at 24 Cancer, so it as a nation is being challenged to think in more practical, less touchy-feely, terms on who exactly should be in charge, possibly releasing what no longer serves.
Back to the Forecast for the week:
Beth Owl’s Daughter’s always-in-sync Tarot Card of the Week captures the strategic planning and organizational potential of four planets in Capricorn, ready to be harnessed by their ruler, Saturn, which is powerfully positioned in Aquarius. And yes, those Really Useful Mercury Retrograde Survival Guide bookmarks Beth was kind enough to mention are still available. Toss $6.99 into my Cosmic Tip Jar and email me your snail mail address, and I will happily send you three bookmarks. May they always help you find your place.
And now, the news.
The end of a lunar cycle is an apt time for something you hope will fly under the radar. That happened last week, as the Sun — leaders — demanded our attention on the Winter Solstice, especially as it squared Jupiter — expansion — at the Aries Point. So what happened?
Note that on Wednesday we will have the third hit of the U.S. Pluto Return. Watch for stories focused on potential shifts in the balance of power, including this one where Rep. Jamie Raskin — who will become the Ranking Member on the Congressional Oversight Committee in the 118th Congress — declares that the Electoral College is “a threat to the American people.” Raskin has his Mercury at 1 Capricorn — on the Aries Point. What he thinks and communicates can’t help but attract attention, especially now, as it is squared by transiting Jupiter.
I leave you with funny writer Dave Barry’s annual recap of all the top stories of 2022 — in case you missed them.
Please stay bundled up in this cold weather.
Here is the 411 on personal consultations and more…
Whitney & I will record a fresh episode of Off the Charts: A Stellar Newscast. Look for it this Friday.
I do hope this statue of Mercury is still standing strong in Ukraine.
Monday 12/19/2022: Sneak Peek at a Big Week; Winter Solstice; Jupiter in Aries; New Moon in Capricorn
/in The ForecastAllllll righty then!
It’s a big, big week in cosmic happenings, even more than listed in the last forecast:
It goes like this:
A pause, while we review the potential of Jupiter’s second ingress into Aries in 2022 (compared to Jupiter in Pisces), originally posted at the end of 2021:
Jupiter will remain in Aries until May 17th. Then it enters Taurus, where it will reflect efforts to give material stability to Jupiter in Aries’ fiery expansion. Meanwhile, I expect the summer months Down Under will be as hot, hot, hot as this past summer in the Northern Hemisphere. If you were born in the first nine days of just about any sign — but especially Aries — congratulations, you’re getting the third hit of Jupiter’s potentially expansive abundance between now and mid-February, as Jupiter continues to retrace its retrograde steps.
A pause, while we discuss the Winter Solstice.
In the Northern Hemisphere, days will be getting longer and nights will be getting shorter. If you live south of the equator, you are celebrating the first day of summer. In any case, with the Sun in Capricorn, we move from big-picture thinking (Sagittarius) to practical application. What will we build that will materially define our collective philosophy? Think corporations, governments and maybe The Junior League. Think status and ambition.
Here’s what you need to know about the first day of any season — i.e., equinoxes and solstices — from an astrological point of view. The first days of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter correspond with the first days (or first degree) of Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, respectively. Got that? Good. These four signs are called cardinal signs. Cardinal signs initiate. They come up with the idea and put it into action, which leads to necessary change.
“Cardinal” suggests (from the Latin root of the word), “that on which something turns or depends.” So the first day/degree of a Cardinal sign is a turning point. In astrology, the technical term for the first degree of any Cardinal sign is the Aries Point, just to confuse people who are not professional astrologers.
Equinoxes and solstices are also prominent. We make a fuss over them, right? In Japan, the first day of each season is a national holiday. How cool is that? Thus, in a horoscope, a planet or angle at the Aries Point needs to be prominent. Off the top of my head, other people with planets or angles at the Aries Point include Meryl Streep, Khrystyne Haje, Prince William, Steven Mnuchin, Harvey Weinstein, Andrew McCabe and Edward Snowden.
A chart for a new season suggests the game plan for the next three months. Here is the Winter Solstice chart set in Washington, D.C.:
Observations:
Back to the forecast:
Here is Beth Owl’s Daughter’s always-in-sync Tarot Card of the Week. Easy does it!
And now, the news.
Now that the January 6th Committee has held its final hearing, it is interesting to note that:
Speaking of ethics, the most mind-blowing story I’ve read today is about George Santos, a Republican who prevailed in his second attempt to win a seat in Congress. He will represent parts of Long Island and Queens if he actually serves. Today the New York Times reported that Santos has repeatedly lied about his education and work experience. He never graduated from Baruch College or NYU. He never worked at Citigroup or Goldman Sachs. Here is his bogus website. So how in the world have none of these total lies been reported on…by the press or any opposing candidate…until now?
That’s a rhetorical question, because obviously we can see the potential snake oil in what we know of Santos’ horoscope — if he really was born in Queens on July 22, 1988 (three months before Hope Hicks). Mars square Neptune is always an alert for possibly getting carried away by one’s own spin. Santos would have a knack for spin with a regal Leo Sun (who dares challenge a king) in an easy flow with Jupiter in blah blah double talking Gemini, which in turn is in an easy flow with action hero Mars in highly efficient Aries. Looking at current transits in what we may know about this horoscope, it’s clear he’s due for a breakout, a break down and heavy responsibility. Time will tell if he will be further empowered or held accountable. He was the chosen candidate of the party that supported Herschel Walker, after all. Such interesting times.
In other news…
There is a bomb cyclone weather pattern developing over much of the country this week. With Jupiter moving from Neptune to the Sun, this week — and demanding prominence at the end of Pisces, this is not surprising. We’ve seen patterns like this before.
Meanwhile…
Stay tuned to this channel for more on Friday’s New Moon, and a recap of all the big stuff that’s likely to pull focus this week.
Here’s the 411 on personal consultations, written reports and gift certificates.
Yes, I still have Mercury Rx bookmarks — $6.99 for three and your snail mail address will get them in the post. Toss the coin into my Cosmic Tip Jar as a Joyful Random Expression of Appreciation.
Thank you for reading this forecast — and sharing it with friends.
Happiest of holidaze to you.
Friday 12/16/2022 & the Weekend: Sun Square Neptune in the News
/in The ForecastTGIF!!
Here’s the recap of the weekend forecast:
No sleeping in on MONDAY. The Scorpio Moon will not be void, and its only connection is a cooperative one to Venus, exact at 8:21 PM ET. This week may be quite grand and wonderful, as…

Avid Reader Ann wanted to know what my 2023 Really Useful Mercury Retrograde Survival Guide Bookmarks looked like. Here is the top of the front side — and on the back is the list of Mercury Rx dates for 2023, along with a bulletpointed list of do’s and don’ts. If you need to see the whole image, email me. My computer currently refuses to file screenshots in a place where I can actually find them. The bookmarks fit neatly into a regular letter or stocking, and Ann bought enough for every member of her book club — what a fun idea!
I will send you three bookmarks in exchange for $6.99 — toss it in my Cosmic Tip Jar. Shout-out to Avid Reader Laura in Georgia, whose printing company did such a beautiful job! Second shout-out to Mark Marshall at Interage, who made my design concept look fabulous! Mark is also my webmaster, if you’re looking….
Also…for last-minute holiday shoppers, I now have gift certificates for consultations and reports that I can send via email or snail mail.
And now, the news.
In the aftermath of Wednesday’s square (tension) between Sun (leaders of state and business) and Neptune (healing, lies, intangible, fraud, oceans, the surreal, etc., etc.)”
Meanwhile…
In other news…
Mars Rx continues to reflect war, war, war on words. In the Twittersphere, Chief Tw*t suspended the accounts of mainstream journalists who published stories about him that he didn’t like. It’s exhausting having yet another Biff Tannen with so much power and influence. Conventional astrological wisdom argues that whoever starts a war when Mars is retrograde is likely to lose. Chief Tw*t has certainly been warring…so we’ll see what happens once Mars turns direct and gets out of Gemini. Meanwhile, here’s another apt Mars Rx in Gemini headline:
Finally, from the files of The Horoscope Lives Forever…

Monday 12/12/2022: Sneak Peek at the Week; Neptune Carries On
/in The ForecastIt’s Monday. Do you know where your planets are?
I’ll tell you.
Highlights this week:
That’s it.
for last-minute holiday gift shoppers, I now have gift certificates I can send via email (much as I enjoy decorating snail mail gift certificates by hand). And speaking of snail mail, the 2023 Really Useful Mercury Retrograde Survival Guide Bookmarks have arrived! I’ll be happy to send you three in exchange for a $6.99 contribution to my Cosmic Tip Jar. The bookmarks are great stocking stuffers. Shout-out to Avid Reader Laura, whose printing company did such a beautiful job!
And now, the news.
Still more BIG stories in sports, courts, publishing and foreign affairs, reflecting last week’s squares between Mercury-Venus and Jupiter (all at the high-profile Aries Point), and last week’s opposition between the Sun and macho Mars:
Meanwhile…
We’re less than three weeks away from the third exact hit of the U.S. Pluto Return, which happens on December 28th. Here’s a post from last January, written several weeks before the first hit in February. Basically the US Pluto Return was — and still is — expected to expose corruption in our systems of business and government. It also affords an opportunity for a very likely shift in the balance of power and resources. It’s likely because this is what has happened in the United States in the aftermath of a challenging aspect of transiting Pluto to the U.S. natal Pluto, as explained in that link from January. The third hit of a multi-hit cycle is usually more intense than the ones before, and we’re seeing this in an uptick of revelations about aforementioned corruption. Today, for example, Talking Points Memo began publishing “The Meadows Texts: A Plot to Overturn an American Election,” starring 34 members of Congress, especially Ted Cruz. Jupiter is at the Aries Point all this week and next, and Avid Readers know what that means: Ted Cruz will be all over the news!
UPDATE: on Kyrsten Sinema, whose horoscope is an apt reflection of the tension we all experienced this fall, as old guard Saturn was in a close challenging aspect (a square) with avant-garde Uranus. Both planets were — and still are — in fixed signs, i.e., Aquarius and Taurus, respectively. A fixed sign (the others are Scorpio and Leo) are signs that are like the immovable object: fixed in their opinions and not inclined to change. Sinema — as explained in past write-ups of her horoscope, as well as in a past episode of Off the Charts: A Stellar Newscast — has a Saturn-Uranus square in her natal chart, with Saturn in Leo and Uranus in Scorpio. Fixed! Not only that, but her Aquarius Moon opposes Saturn and squares Uranus. Is she old guard or is she avant-garde? Yes! And this week, just days before the third and final opposition of Pluto to her Venus, she announced she’s leaving the Democratic Party to become an Independent.
In Sinema’s horoscope, Pluto rules her values, self-worth and money. Venus rules her Libra Ascendant — how she needs to be seen — and also her 8th house — other peoples’ money and values. A skilled astrologer would anticipate the pressure Sinema has been under this year to purge, transform and potentially empower herself in these areas of her life. Pluto is also connecting with a Sinema’s Sun-Moon midpoint — which suggests all of these power dynamics and purging and transforming are likely to play out in her relationships. A separation would not be unexpected. And by the way, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is also having this Pluto-Sun/Moon midpoint transit, and note that she has stepped down as leader of the Democrats in Congress.
Whitney and I will probably talk more about Sinema’s horoscope in the next episode of Off the Charts: A Stellar Newscast, so stay tuned.
In other news…
Avid Readers sent me a lot of stories last week!
Avid Reader Jeri, who is also a Faithful Monthly Supporter of this forecast, wanted to make sure I didn’t miss the latest on “Sam Brinton: A Trans Activist with Baggage.” It’s a weird story, frankly. Brinton is the first openly non-binary person to serve in a federal government leader role (they were the deputy assistant secretary of spent fuel and waste disposition in the Office of Nuclear Energy, reports Rolling Stone). They have also been charged with luggage theft at more than one airport in recent months. Bewildering, isn’t it? We don’t have a birth time for Brinton, but Avid Reader Jeri sent the date and place: Sept 11, 1987, Perry Iowa.
Brinton is a Virgo with the Sun sandwiched between Venus and Mars. Their Venus is square Uranus, suggesting unconventional attractions and social expressions, with a strong independent streak. Their Mars is square Saturn, suggesting a potentially militant application of authority — or a controlled application of assertive energy. Saturn and Uranus are in a wide conjunction in boundary-pushing, righteous Sagittarius — and their Virgo Sun is caught right in the middle of this old guard vs. avant garde dilemma. Right now, transiting Mars and Neptune are all over these two squares. We anticipate bewildering provocation. Astrology is amazing.
Meanwhile, their Mercury — how they need to think and communicate — is in “both sides” Libra, square nebulous Neptune — about to be blown up (like a balloon) by transiting Jupiter in Aries. Moon is in Taurus, likely opposing Pluto in Scorpio — and this is simply intense. Finally, their Jupiter is at 28 Aries — a need for reward that is all me-me-me — and transiting Pluto is about to amplify that need in the extreme as it travels through the last two degrees of Capricorn in 2023. Usually a super-charged pattern between Pluto and Jupiter facilitates access to extremes of power and resources. I’m not sure how this will play out in Brinton’s case.
Thank you, Jeri, for making sure I didn’t miss this story — with its fascinating astrology.
UPDATE: Seems like it was only yesterday when we were writing about how planetary patterns in the horoscope of Qatar aptly reflected how it was being blockaded and squeezed by four of its Arab neighbors. That was Qatar getting Saturn from all angles in 2017, as Avid Readers may have surmised, given the words “blockaded” and “squeezed.” Now Qatar is on the verge of getting Neptune from all angles — and how do you think Qatar is making news lately? In stories of scandal and corruption, including “What are the Qatari bribery allegations rocking the European Parliament?”
Just for fun:
And finally…
By ONE vote. Don’t ever think yours doesn’t count.
Here’s the 411 on personal consultations. Yes, I have gift certificates — and written reports — and Mercury Retrograde Bookmarks! And a Cosmic Tip Jar for Avid Readers who are inspired by the holidaze! ‘Tis the season! And I have PowerPoints on how astrology works and what we can expect in 2023. If you’d like to book me for a speaking engagement, that would be super fun!
