I am a reporter with a unique beat. I use my understanding of planetary cycles to provide advance notice and analysis on the Zeitgeist of the day. If you have ever wondered “why is this happening now,” my insights will transform your experience of the headlines, adding new meaning and understanding. Call it Astrology for News Junkies. If you’re curious to know why the Impossible Burger is trending…or why the outcome of the 2019 Israeli elections was likely to be a shocker …or why “Woodrow Wilson, Stud Muffin” was a New York Times headline in December 2013, you will find it here, in over a decade’s worth of historical research and reporting.
Note that I do use astrological jargon in The Forecast in my effort to show how the planetary patterns are reflected in mundane events. I explain what the jargon symbolizes, so that all who want to understand the connections between astrology and the news may do so. However, I do not use astrological jargon in personal consultations, just plain English.

Astro-logical Forecast for Tuesday 3/5/2013: Make a Wish
/in The ForecastBouncing out of bed with enthusiasm or all riled up about something this morning — which will it be? The opinionated Sagittarius Moon is challenged by steaming Mars in Pisces at 10:28AM ET, which sets the tone for the day and then immediately goes void-of-course. Go with the energetic flow, find a way to expand your horizons and get ready for a wave of “make it happen” energy once Moon enters enterprising Capricorn at 7:14PM ET.
Tomorrow should be busy, busy, busy — with planets figuratively bouncing off one another like a pinball machine. In fact the whole rest of the week offers excellent productivity, in that Mercury retrograde REstructure, REview, REorganize, RE anything way. We are in the dark side of the Moon — the end of the lunar cycle — good for bringing projects to completion. I was delighted to see the idea of completion and fulfillment echoed in the weekly Tarot card pulled and posted on Beth Owlsdaughter’s well-written blog.
And now, the news. We were talking about the idealism suggested by Mercury’s blinding hook-up with the Sun (exact yesterday), and a reader sent in this video that’s been spreading like wildfire. It’s quite simple: a status quo-disrupting wake-up call, true to the ever-present hum of the revolutionary square between Uranus and Pluto (from now through 2015). It shatters idealism with a hand from heavy Saturn in nitty-gritty Scorpio. The video is about wealth distribution in America — how people think it should be shared in an ideal world; how they believe it is being shared currently; and how it really is being shared. Can you handle the truth?
Check it out, and be advised that when you come across a horoscope with Sun conjunct Mercury you’re likely dealing with an idealist — someone who sees things the way he or she needs to (perhaps as a survival strategy), but who may not be willing or able to acknowledge harsh realities. I learned that from astrologer Noel Tyl. Thank you, Noel!
Shall we look at few lighter news items that reflect current planetary patterns? OK! We’ve got six planets floating through Pisces right now (if you include Chiron), and this dreamy concentration can be oh-so hard to pin down. I’ve gotten plenty of email noting how slooooooow things feel right now — like watching fish swim in a goldfish bowl — or herding cats, as I noted last week. Things WILL pick up — and quickly, as we will may see as early as the next week’s New Moon. Meanwhile, here’s a story about efforts to herd cats that is going on right now in New York. These folks are so in tune with the cosmos…
Finally, perfectly reflecting the sugary sweetness suggested by yesterday’s square between Venus and Jupiter, would you believe this charming and eloquent post showed up in my Facebook feed about — wait for it — the importance of owning a candy dish.
Mercury retrograde is an excellent time to REview your life in a personal astro-logical consultation. Mercury turns direct on March 17th.
Astro-logical Forecast for Monday 3/4/2013: March Forth!
/in The ForecastIf you’re just tuning in to the Daily Astro-logical Forecast, welcome! What a day we’ve got in store…
Gone are the probing depths of yesterday’s intense Scorpio Moon (as of 4:11PM ET on Sunday). Moon is now in high-flying Sagittarius, a sign that needs to tell the world exactly what it thinks — and the more righteous, the better. Donald Trump and Charlie Sheen have Moon in Sag; if you concluded that Sagittarius is prone to bouts of foot-in-mouth disease, you would be right. Much boisterous, expansive and indulgent energy is available for hire today, courtesy of challenging input from Jupiter (the cosmic sugar daddy and ruler of Sagittarius) squaring loving Venus (women, love, aesthetics and some glittery things, too).
There’s also a blinding hook-up between the Sun (life force) and Mercury (mind, communication, travel) that suggests strong potential for focused idealism. Really, you may have to take a lot of what you hear with a grain of salt, especially given that Mercury is retrograde through the 17th. Chances are good a few key details are missing. You may want to refrain from engaging in heated discussion around 4PMish ET, given that the opinionated Moon will also be challenged by mental Mercury. On the other hand, witnessing such discussions could be vastly entertaining.
Ship it today if you must ship, as the Moon is void-of-course from 10:28AM – 7:14PM ET on Tuesday. Other voids this week are Thursday from 4:14 – 10:02PM ET and on Friday from 5:08PM ET until 1:19AM SUNDAY. For those new to the forecast, Moon voids suggest natural rest periods, a time to wander, chill, turn inward and/or brainstorm. If you can’t take advantage of the break, be advised that efforts to move forward in a straight line are more likely to plagued by twists, flakes, delays and crises that turn out to be much ado about nothing. Roll with the twists and don’t freak out.
A typical example of Moon void phenomena happened yesterday, when a friend on Facebook reported that a man walked into a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown and asked if the restaurant served Chinese. D’oh! Another happened to me whilst shopping at Trader Joe’s, as somehow I ended up schlepping two bottles of olive oil home instead of the one bottle I needed. Wtf?? This is one reason why impulse shopping during voids is not advised. Chances are higher that whatever you buy won’t be as useful or satisfying as you hoped.
And now, the news. First, with Venus and Jupiter now in a hard aspect to each other, it was no surprise to see this story about the real cause of diabetes making headlines. Why? Consider this: in a horoscope, hard aspects between Jupiter and Venus often reflect the presence of diabetes in a person’s extended family (we know this thanks to the work of astrologer Noel Tyl). Fascinating, eh? Now consider this: in the horoscope of the United States, where diabetes is rampant, Jupiter and Venus are in a hard aspect to each other. Coincidence or conspiracy? (cue Twilight Zone music now)
Second, as stern Saturn continues its slow retrograde grind at 11 degrees of Scorpio, we’re seeing stories of elite gatherings — for better or for worse — including last Thursday’s farewell to the Pope and the conclave that has gathered to select a new one. The Supreme Court is another elite body that made headlines last week, courtesy of Justice Scalia, who seemed to say that the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was a “perpetuation of racial entitlement”. Let the record show that another happening in 1965 was the status quo-disrupting conjunction between rebel Uranus and “resistance is futile” Pluto. Regular readers of this forecast know that Uranus and Pluto are now squaring each other, which suggests that issues raised and seemingly resolved back in the mid-60s are all up for review and revolutionary expansion in the mid 2010s. So if you were around in the 60s and things feel familiar, there is a most excellent astro-logical explanation for it.
And in case you missed it, here is the response to Justice Scalia from the good folks at Saturday Night Live.
Mercury retrograde is an excellent time to REview your life in a personal astro-logical consultation, especially if you have not done so in over a year.
Astro-logical Forecast for Friday 3/1/2013 & The Weekend: Depth & Substance
/in The ForecastStill basking in the glow of yesterday’s sweet hook-up between loving Venus and nebulous Neptune (dreams, art, music, spirit), not to mention the Moon void in peace-seeking Libra? I hope you found plenty of opportunities to express or witness random acts of kindness and senseless beauty. Like the white-haired man in the red beret playing “The William Tell Overture” on a violin. On the E train. Behind him, a young man wearing headphones leaned casually against the subway doors, engaged in animated conversation — in American Sign Language — with a young woman. The young man communicated only with his hands; the young woman used her hands and lip-synched expressively. Her back was turned to the violinist and I wondered what was her sense — if any — of the music being played? Poetry in motion…only in New York. And speaking of sweet surprises found on the E train, this story will melt your heart.
The lunar freefall continues until 12:33 PM ET, possibly tossing more twists in your morning routine. When the Moon finally ingresses into Scorpio, it demands substance and knowledge for the sake of power and control. No more of this airy-fairy “what if” stuff. Patterns are excellent for consolidation and organization of your rarefied thoughts, given supportive contacts to the dreamy Pisces Sun from disciplined Saturn and potent Pluto. It’ll be interesting to see if the official “go” for this sequester thing everyone has been talking about happens when the Moon is still void; if so, the astro-logic suggests it may be much ado about nothing. Your evening plans can still be sweet, even with the Scorpio Moon’s intensity, as it is softened by harmonious aspects from the lovely Venus-Neptune meet-up that is the highlight of this dreamy — yes, I said it again — week.
A wet blanket may greet some upon waking on Saturday, courtesy of a chilly connection between Moon and Saturn at 8:16AM ET. Work with the limitations constructively, as the rest of the day is also excellent for cooperative ventures, deep communication and organization.
Get your shopping done Saturday; avoid the malls on Sunday, as Moon will be void Sunday from 4:19AM ET until 4:11 PM ET. Not only that, but a challenge between beauty-loving Venus and expansive Jupiter suggests a strong potential for overindulgence. Feel free to enjoy the sensual world, but keep an eye on your wallet, as temptation to spend may be strong.
The Moon in Sagittarius after 4:11PM ET on Sunday usually needs to broaden horizons, but it is also inclined to gamble as well as gambol. Ohhh, I suppose a few lottery tickets won’t break your piggy bank. Wretched excess we may see…and perhaps a big winner or two before the day is done.
Meanwhile, Bradley Manning made headlines yesterday when he entered a guilty plea for 10 of the 18 zillion charges against him, and he now faces trial for the rest. This may add years to 20-year prison sentence he received today. We discussed Manning’s horoscope way back in December of 2010. I’m sure he knows all about gambles and opinions, as he has four planets in righteous Sagittarius. And with three planets in Scorpio, along with the Moon, I think he might grok with the need for knowledge that grants power and control (you can read his explanation of why he gave classified documents to Wikileaks in the first link in this paragraph).
What struck me in 2010 was the sense that his case was not likely to move forward any time soon — even without knowing his birth time (here is the noon chart). Things definitely moved forward today — so what’s going on with planetary patterns? How about Saturn at 11 degrees of Scorpio, now sitting exactly on Manning’s natal Pluto. This is where Saturn turned retrograde on February 18th; you may recall that anyone with planets or angles at 11 Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius would likely feel this retrograde the most. Difficult aspects between stern Saturn and ruthless Pluto are nearly always tough, suggesting periods of hard work at the risk of great loss. This heavy period is likely to continue for Manning through the rest of the year, which makes perfect sense, given that he now faces trial on the remaining charges.
Have a lovely weekend of depth and substance. This year I’m thinking March is coming in like a lamb and going out like a lion. Stay tuned…

Astro-logical Forecast for Thursday 2/28/2013: Gently Down the Stream
/in The ForecastFirst, some housekeeping. A link to the article about the visual effects artists was missing from yesterday’s forecast. Here it is. As for today:
Mercury is retrograde. Moon is void-of-course all day in Libra…not to enter the next sign until noonish ET on Friday. Lovely Venus continues to mingle with dreamy Neptune. How can you make use of this natural break in the action? Do some brainstorming. Meditate. Go with the flow and amaze yourself as you re-invent the wheel, like this:
Variation 1
or this — even more multi-dimensional:
Variation 2
This simple song has a fascinating history. Find out what the lyrics really mean.
Here is a version for the kid in all of us — with lyrics — dreamy!
Much gratitude to you all for the lovely emails this rose-colored week has generated. I think you are great, too. Thank you for reading and sharing this forecast : )

Astro-logical Forecast for Wednesday 2/27/2013: A Day of Herding Cats
/in The ForecastOh, these crazy Mercury retrogrades/Moon void combinations. Why else would my ISP fail to function as designed, thus delaying the posting of today’s forecast? Thank goodness for Mark Marshall at Interage. Have you hired him to build your website yet?
Today’s whether forecast calls for sugar-spun clouds of social graces and pleasantly rational thoughts, courtesy of the people-pleasing Moon in airy Libra (as of 8:02AM ET). And yet Venus is mingling with nebulous Neptune, joining three other planets in the watery depths of Pisces. On the upside, there’s the potential for random acts of kindness and senseless acts of sweet beauty. On the down side, some may feel they searching for an anchor. Others may prefer to simply choke in shallow waters. Or wallow. Or drown (cue Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians now).
I say take the high road. This lovely Libra Moon and Mercury retrograde offer opportunities to re-connect with people you haven’t seen in ages. Why not reach out? The sublime Venus-Neptune meet-up offers healers, writers, musicians and other charitable and creative types divine inspiration over the next few days. And perhaps to some romantics, too. As evening approaches, be mindful of a potential revelation or other jolt when the peaceful Libra Moon is disrupted by rebel Uranus at 8:11PMET. The rest of the night could be just jolly…and end with a reeeeallly long sigh. Moon goes void at 3:37AM ET Thursday …not to enter Scorpio until 12:33PM ET on FRIDAY.
Meanwhile, in line with the startling events involving declarations of independence by women suggested by the current lunar cycle, I hope you took one reader’s suggestion and watched Makers: Women Who Make America on PBS last night. Regular readers of this forecast know that civil rights were a huge theme in the 60s, as reflected by the Uranus-Pluto conjunction of 1965-66. Freedom. Equality. Disruption of the status quo! Fifty years later, Uranus and Pluto are at it again — as of 2012 and thru 2015. Three years is a loooooonng time for these two “resistance is futile” planets to figuratively collide. So many of the seeds that were planted during the 60s are back now — with a vengeance — to claim victory over oppression once and for all. Just ask the Great State of Mississippi, which finally — last week — ratified the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery. Congratulations, Mississippi…for taking so long to bring to fruition the seeds of equality that were planted at the Uranus-Pluto conjunction that happened in…1850.
In other related news, the plight of so-called pink-collar workers, specifically those at Weight Watchers was illuminated by Monday’s Full Moon in Virgo (workers) opposing the Sun in Pisces (suffering). Columnist Maureen Dowd seems unamused by the harsh controls imposed on workers by Yahoo’s female CEO. Other Pisces keywords are film and illusion; here’s another aptly timed labor (Virgo) gripe that was highlighted at the Oscars: the visual effects artists who make movie magic (e.g., Life of Pi) vs. their employers. That’s why so many Facebook profile pics have turned chroma key green, btw. So now you know.
Chroma key green with envy is what your friends will be when you tell them you REviewed your life with your astrologer during this Mercury retrograde.
