Astro-logical Forecast for Friday 2/20/2015 & the Weekend: Venus & Mars at the Aries Point

Go with the flow of the Pisces Moon, void as it is until 6:13PM ET. A slow start to your morning commute? Meetings cancelled or flaked upon because of the freezing cold? Take care of routine and roll with twists and delays experienced in efforts to move forward in a straight line. Patience may be a challenge, with Mars already in RAMbunctious Aries and Venus joining it at 3:06PM ET. Some may be chomping at the bit by the time the Moon joins the party and quickly hooks up with Mars and Venus between 6:30pm and 7:30PM ET. Passions and tempers may ignite — which would you prefer? Venus in Aries is such a flirt — and Mars in Aries knows how to close that deal. It’s New Moon energy and a new day — socially speaking — as Piscean empathy, melancholy and soulful suffering in matters of social expression are shelved for the idealism and fearlessness of Aries fire.
Saturday is fine for chores done fast and furiously. At 5:04PM and 6:13PM ET, Moon makes its weekly clash with the Uranus-Pluto square; complete your tasks by then if you want to avoid an upset or a power play. Moon goes void on an expansive trine to Jupiter….not to enter steady, stabilizing Taurus until 7:28PM ET on SUNDAY. That’s a 24-hour chill period — suitable for wandering — and for not making mountains of crises out of molehills. And no shopping, if you please — that thing you impulsively buy is not likely to live up to expectations.
Biggest news on Sunday is the exact conjunction between Venus and Mars. More of the same sparks flying — for better or for worse. The Taurus Moon that shows up just in time for the Oscars slows down the charge, keeping things as they ought to be — in a monumental, comforting sort of way. And the Oscar goes to…the nominee who best embodies a fiercely quirky independence that challenges the established order; a fighting spirit that believes in the impossible; and somehow makes everything turn out as it should. Hmm — why not Grand Budapest Hotel?
Truthfully, I have not examined the horoscopes of the nominees, but suffice it to say that all of them are hot, or they wouldn’t even be in the running. American Sniper would not be my pick, even though it is the favorite of the American people. This film, which appears to glorify and idealize (Neptune) a gun-slinging (Mars) hero, was released on a Mars-Neptune conjunction. The U.S. horoscope has a Mars-Neptune square.
There’s no Moon void on Monday — no sleeping in . One pattern that’s exact at 8:56AM ET — and will be felt through the weekend –is the heavy challenge between the Sun in compassionate/martyred Pisces and Saturn in righteous Sagittarius. This affords us the opportunity to grumble about whoever was snubbed on Sunday. This Saturn-Sun square also suggests a righteous reach, based on faith. Fearless leaders everywhere may fish or cut bait — or at least opine about it, with karmic consequences.
And now, the news.
Venus and Mars in Aries suggest new beginnings. Venus and Mars — and any other planet — at the last degree of Pisces suggest endings. Cosmic law: we must go through the ending in order to get to the new beginning. And this can be a melancholic, suffering, martyred or compassionate experience. Even if it is true that “what the chrysalis calls the end of the world, the Master calls a butterfly.” I read that in a book called Illusions years ago. Highly recommended.
So on a day — yesterday — with Venus and Mars at the very end of the zodiac — it was fascinating to see an NYT op-ed written by Oliver Sacks, the beloved author, physician and professor of neurology. A few weeks ago Dr. Sacks learned he has terminal cancer. In this compelling essay, he writes about how he is coping with an inevitable end. It reminded me of a conversation I had recently with a man who’s been on an extraordinary path of spiritual growth, including a kundalini awakening, spirit guides showing up in his living room — that sort of perspective-transforming thing. And he’s come to believe that part of our spiritual work on this planet is to prepare ourselves properly for our eventual demise. “It’s part of life,” he told me.
Dr. Sacks has a planet — Mars in Libra (rational, gracious action) — at the Aries Point. And there he is on the front page. Also on the front page today is Rudy Giuliani.With a 29 degree Virgo Ascendant and a 29 degree Gemini Midheaven, he can’t help but attract attention, especially with nebulous Neptune sitting right on that Ascendant at 1 degree Libra. The glasses he wears are shades of rose, seen as if he’s in his own personal idealistic fog. His Sun-Uranus conjunction in Gemini can’t help but shake things up in a big way, though currently that rebellious combo is also shrouded in heavy fog, as transiting Neptune squares it.
So yesterday Mr. Giuliani makes headlines at a fundraiser for Scott Walker by saying that President Obama “doesn’t love America”. Which is astrologically absurd when you consider that Obama’s Venus (affection) is prominently placed at the Aries Point at 1 Cancer (mom, homeland and apple pie). But isn’t it interesting how the president’s Aries Point planet was triggered by transiting Venus and Mars, and the media can’t help but focus on the president’s affections. Do you think Mr. Giuliani understands that President Obama is not running for re-election next year? “I want an American president to raise our spirits again, like a Ronald Reagan,” Mr. Giuliani stated. Under such a heavy Neptune influence, I suppose we can forgive Mr. Giuliani for not recalling this iconic image from Obama’s first presidential campaign.
I ended up writing about Rudy Giuliani instead of finishing a write-up of the horoscope of the entity known as ISIS or ISIL or IS or Daesh — depending on what newspaper you’re reading. That’s a heavy subject, but it’s not likely going away in the immediate future, as in tomorrow or next week or next month. What prompted me to considering writing about it now is this in-depth article from The Atlantic, which has gone viral. It presents the entity’s ideology as — cribbed here from a related shorter, simpler CNN piece –“an apocalyptic cult that believes that we are living in the end times and that [its] actions are hastening the moment when that will happen”. There’s also a profile in the NYT of one young man who left his home in Cairo to join this entity, much to the pain of his family.
Ending on the first uplifting headline I see on the NYT homepage. Gail Collins profiles Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who is never, never, never giving up…and –ooh — something even more uplifting: an email that just landed in my inbox:
Astro-logical Forecast for Thursday 2/19/2015: Mars in Aries
/in The ForecastNote your dreams upon waking, as the Pisces Moon hooks up with Neptune at 5:49AM ET. A cooperative connection between Mercury and Saturn — the third in a series noted in prior forecasts this week — may inspire a practical way to turn a vision into reality. Moon goes void on a deep and potentially healing connection to Pluto at 6:01PM ET….not to enter Aries until Friday at 6:13PM ET. So get it off your desk today rather than tomorrow, if you can.
Other cosmic news of note: Mars leaves Pisces for Aries, the sign it rules, at 7:12PM ET. At its best, Mars in Aries is courageous, inspiring, pioneering and a fighter for the underdog. It can be extremely efficient when it comes to taking action. It has great physical stamina and prowess. At its worst, Mars in Aries can be way too macho — fighting for the sake of fighting; needing to win at any cost.
Mars rules steel, guns and war — and at 0 degrees of Aries, it suggests that such matters will be prominent. Hence we have Gail Collins writing about Senator John Cornyn’s proposed bill — introduced earlier this month that would:
Ms. Collins tears this proposal to shreds. Cheerfully, of course.
It makes me think about the satirical cartoon, A Brief History of the United States, which appeared in Michael Moore’s Oscar-winning documentary, Bowling for Columbine. Which then makes me think about an Oklahoma state legislator’s bill that would eliminate funding for high school A.P. History classes, because the legislator believes that the class curriculum takes “a consistently negative view of American history”. This would be along the lines of Saturn in Sagittarius controls we’d expect in collective belief systems, of which higher education is one.
I’m fuming today about an incident in Alabama in which a 57-year old man from India was taking a morning stroll in the most boring looking suburban neighborhood you have ever seen. This man was visiting his son. He’d come from India to help his son and daughter take care of their young son. He was spotted walking on the sidewalk by one of the neighbors — a man — who apparently was following him in a car as he strolled. This man called 911 to report the mysterious “skinny black guy”. Whatever happened to people smiling and waving “hello” to people out for a morning stroll, as has been known to occur in places like Maine — or even on the busy streets of Manhattan?
Anyway, with Mars within two degrees of the Ascendant (Feb 6, 8:19AM in Madison, AL), two police officers show up and within minutes the Indian grandfather has been thrown to the ground, thus breaking his back. Fortunately the incident was captured on film, so the lies the officers told about the man “putting his hands in his pockets” did not hold up. One of the officers was fired and faces criminal charges. I want to know more about that 911 caller, though. Who is he? Why did he feel so threatened? How does he feel now?
Can you tell I’m experiencing a Mars transit in my horoscope today? When Mars is making contact with planets or points in a horoscope, we can expect action, assertion, anger, accidents — and it’s not always pretty. It can be heroic, though. If you have a planet or angle around 0 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn, you may be feeling riled up, too. Not only do you need a physical release, but with Venus entering Aries tomorrow, you’d also benefit from a constructive social expression of your ruling passions.
One woman whose horoscope was affected by Mars at the Aries Point is Christina Bond (Oct 8, 1959 in Niles, MI). She died in early January in a freak accident. While adjusting the gun holster she had tucked inside her bra, the gun fired. No surprises in her horoscope. Ms. Bond’s Sun is at 14 Libra… hit by the Uranus-Pluto square and by October’s lunar eclipse…and by yet another measurement from freaky Uranus to her Sun. We’d expect sudden prominence and fierce individualism. Strange that news of her death was delayed, but perhaps not from the perspective of planetary patterns. It made headlines when transiting Mars made contact with her Saturn at 1 Capricorn (also an Aries Point) — prominence!
Also making headlines: controversy over Chinese New Year, and whether it is the Year of the Sheep (sheep are ruled by Aries) or the Year of the Goat (goats are ruled by Capricorn). Really, which is it? Hong Kong’s leader thinks it’s the former, and has urged citizens to act accordingly. Not likely, in a year with Uranus in Aries (sheep/ram) squaring Pluto in Capricorn (goat). Here’s more on the debate from the NYT, as well as an earlier article about the apparent push — pun obviously intended — to give birth before February 19th, as some believe the Year of the Sheep is unlucky. We shall see!

Astro-logical Forecast for Wednesday 2/18/2015: New Moon in Aquarius (again!); Elizabeth Warren, Rand Paul, DSK & More
/in The ForecastNo exact planetary aspects happening on this truly Dead Moon morning, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be stuff happening. Venus and Mars are within orb of the Aries Point, suggesting Venus-ruled matters (social expression, women, money, values, aesthetics) and Mars-ruled matters (assertion and action) are likely to pull more focus than usual. Right now they’re on the Pisces side of the Aries Point, so add themes of compassion, universal suffering, ideals, impressions and soulful mingling to the mix. When they do meet on the Aries side on Sunday, watch for themes of me-me-me, pioneers, inspiration and conquest.
At 6:47PM ET, the Sun and Moon both meet up at 29 Aquarius. Blink and you’ll miss it. Moon immediately goes void — but only for one minute. It enters Pisces at 6:48PM ET, followed by the Sun in Pisces at 6:50PM ET. It’s rare to have two New Moons in a row in the same sign. January’s New Moon was at 0 Aquarius — the very beginning. This month’s New Moon is at the very end. So we get a second chance to focus on Aquarian concerns, including (but not limited to): innovation, eccentricity, friendship, humanitarianism, freedom, technogeeks and the needs of the collective as opposed to the needs of the individual. Watch for new beginnings and endings in these areas.
A New Moon offers the opportunity to re-set your intentions for the next 30 days. Make a list; light a candle; plant those seeds. Around the 25th, on the First Quarter Moon, we can expect a challenge to those goals, with appropriate adjustments made. How are our seedlings doing? Keep on nurturing them, and at the time of the Full Moon on March 5th, they may flower. We will receive illumination on the success or failure of our goals for the cycle, either way. If we succeeded, we can consciously release our success into our reality; if we failed, we let go of whatever did not work. After the Third Quarter Moon on March 13th, we can harvest our achievements, then tie up loose ends, compost and get ready to begin another New Moon cycle on March 20th.
In the chart for this New Moon, the Sun and Moon are approaching contact with Saturn in Sagittarius. At the last New Moon, there was an easy communication of humanitarian ideals and how they are to be achieved. This cycle requires an ambitious advance on those ideals — at the risk of rejection. Practical — albeit emotionally detached — planning and communication is suggested by an easy connection between mental Mercury and Saturn in Sagittarius. We’ve already noted the potential of Venus and Mars coming together with prominence at the very end of Pisces — plenty of emotional resources suggested here.
With Jupiter about to make the second of three exact trines to Uranus, we see the potential for ground-breaking initiatives. Look back to events happening around September 25, 2014 — that was the first trine of the cycle. The second will be on March 3rd. The third one happens on June 22nd. Last, but hardly least, the revolutionary Uranus-Pluto square is inching closer to its grand finale scheduled for March 16th. And by grand finale, I mean the final release of tension between two planets symbolizing revolution and transformation on a collective scale. What does that suggest? Consider and compare events that happened before and after the three Uranus-Pluto conjunctions in 1965 and 1966.
The Sabian Symbol for this New Moon is “the field of Ardath in bloom,” or, as Sabian Symbol guru Blain Bovee describes it,
I find it intriguing that of 360 possible Sabian Symbols, the one that shows up at this time, when events in that part of the world formerly known as Babylon are approaching critical mass, just happens to be the Symbol that specifically references — at least on one level — that location. On another level, the Symbol refers to all of us, as we collectively approach the critical mass of the seventh Uranus-Pluto square. It is a hopeful Symbol, as Bovee notes that “a whole field in bloom suggest richness and bounty beyond imagination.” A hopeful symbol (with a garden theme) is also presented in Beth Owlsdaughter’s Tarot Card of the Week. So, let’s hope.
In your own personal world, if you were born around the 18th of February, May, August and November…or if you have a planet or angle around 29 degrees of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and especially Aquarius, you will be more personally affected by this New Moon. First, while we’re still in the dark side of the Moon, here is a story about women now living in the Dark Ages — in certain areas of Iraq controlled by extremists.
Meanwhile, reflecting the groundbreaking potential in matters of power and resources suggested by the Uranus-Pluto square and the second Jupiter-Uranus trine, Elon Musk announced a new status quo: living off the grid, thanks to a battery that will allow homeowners to store energy. Elon Musk continues to be innovative in a most supercharged manner, as noted in this forecast back in August of 2013.
Elsewhere, Rand Paul is apparently set to formally announce he’s running for president in April. It makes sense he’d be looking for greater freedom and empowerment, given that his Sun at 16 Capricorn will be supercharged in 2015 and 2016 by Uranus and Pluto. Plus, a solar arc to his Sun by Mars suggests a need to take action, despite recent revelations that he lied about having a college degree. Not having a college degree has never been an issue for Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin, which perhaps explains why his latest mission is to slash funding for Wisconsin’s public university system in exchange for giving it greater autonomy. Serious focus on the practical value of higher education, along with streamlining and restructuring of the system (student loans, anyone?), would be expected with Saturn in Sagittarius for the next couple of years.
I’ve been meaning to write about Elizabeth Warren’s horoscope for months. People are begging her to run for president. She’s gaining greater prominence in the Senate. Hillary Clinton met with her in private recently — this is how important the senator has become. Regular readers of this forecast should have a hunch at what’s going on. We don’t have a confirmed birth time for Ms. Warren, but an astrologer has proposed one, and the related chart does seem to work rather well. Still, take my observations about that proposed Ascendant and Midheaven (“the angles”) with a grain of salt. A chart with a proposed birth time is called a ‘rectification’ or ‘rectified horoscope.’
First, she can’t help but attract attention for her quirky independence and rebellious spirit. Like her astro-twin Meryl Streep, Warren’s Cancer Sun is conjunct Uranus at the Aries Point. Second, I am fascinated that both Ms. Streep and Senator Warren have Midheavens (point in the horoscope referring to career status) at 18 and 19 degrees of a Cardinal Sign, i.e., 18 Aries for Ms. Streep; 19 Cancer for Senator Warren. Therefore. we expect the careers of both women to reflect the empowerment and emancipation/change of direction potential of Uranus and Pluto for the next two years (another Oscar, Ms. Streep?)
In Elizabeth Warren’s rectified horoscope, that potential is even stronger. She would experience Uranus and Pluto from all angles, given that proposed 17 degreeLibra Ascendant. In fact, we can argue that 2014’s exact solar arc to her Ascendant from Pluto has already mandated a change of perspective about how she is seen. She’s emerged as a serious power player, and we can expect that trend to continue — whether she runs or not. Also of significance: her Venus at 18 Cancer (conjunct her rectified Midheaven — you just have to like her), rules that Libra Ascendant. It will also be supercharged by Uranus and Pluto, suggesting her social expression and values will also become more prominent and persuasive.
Last but not least: Dominique Strauss-Kahn is back in the news. We’ve been tracking his horoscope ever since his assault of a hotel chambermaid cost him his post as head of the IMF. Now he’s on trial– charged with pimping. I looked at his horoscope a couple of weeks ago and noted a measurement of the Sun to his Midheaven. This is usually a measurement of success and fulfillment in matters of career and reputation. I thought to myself, “hmm…I’m not convinced these charges will stick.” And in fact, this week some charges were dropped, and yesterday a prosecutor asked the court to acquit Mr. Strauss-Kahn. Julian Assange had the same measurement in his horoscope when Ecuador allowed him to stay in their London embassy, thus avoiding arrest and deportation to Sweden. Astrology is amazing.
Finally, a lighter piece reflecting the reality check Saturn in Sagittarius can have on travel destinations. The candor of tourism officials in the current frozen wasteland of Ithaca, New York deserves applause and a note to put that city on your bucket list….

Astro-logical Forecast for Tuesday 2/17/2015: Sneak Peek at the Week

The Moon has been in humanitarian Aquarius since 7:13PM ET on Monday. There’s an innovative connection between Moon and Uranus at 5:29PM ET and an expansive/expensive face-off between Moon and Jupiter at 8:59PM ET and that’s it. Then we’re on cruise control until the New Moon begins — at 29 Aquarius — at 6:47PM ET on Wednesday.
This is the balsamic phase — the dark side — of the Moon. It’s fine for wrapping up projects you began a month ago and contemplating your wish list for the next lunar cycle. You may be feeling listless or restless, sensing that something new is about to start, but you don’t know what. Perfectly understandable. And speaking of being in the dark, the Sunday NYT Style Magazine ran a fascinating profile about a woman in England who must live in total darkness. In her adult years, her skin has become so sensitive to light that it will burn — painfully so — if exposed. She has written a memoir — soon to be published.
In other news, Fifty Shades of Grey (a.k.a. That Movie)grossed millions of dollars over the weekend, as critics everywhere mourned. What do you think was the biggest turn-off, given Venus, Mars and Neptune in soulful Pisces? Lack of compassion, empathy and love. Chris Hedges raked it over the coals in a provocative commentary. Social scientists have already completed studies concluding that the franchise disempowers young girls. We’ve got less than a week of Venus and Mars in Pisces; they enter me-me-me Aries on Friday and Thursday, respectively. Odds are we’ll be seeing essays searching for courage, inspiration and leadership in our relationships. We are also likely to see more crusades and conflicts among parties fighting to be first, illustrated by selfies.
Meanwhile, an anti-Fifty Shades anthem occurred to me when I read that singer-songwriter Lesley Gore passed away yesterday. If you’ve never heard You Don’t Own Me, you can hear it — more of Ms. Gore’s hits — here. RIP.
Elsewhere, an update. It’s been almost a year since this forecast anticipated a year of prominence and empowerment for Vladimir Putin. This week, his approval rating in Russia soared to its highest in years, another paper reported Russia’s expanding influence in Europe.

Astro-logical Forecast for Friday & The Weekend: The News is The News; President Obama Update
/in The ForecastMoon continues its sojourn through Sagittarius today, armed with a spirit of high-flying righteousness. The need to expand horizons may be tripped up by the adjustments required by Mercury’s change of direction — forward, now — on Wednesday. Sorry, travelers, but United won’t honor that $70 first-class ticket from Heathrow to Newark you thought you’d scored, thanks to a computer glitch. Meanwhile, Jeb Bush and his staff scrambled to redact a boatload of sensitive personal data of Florida constituents that was inadvertently released (because no one bothered to read it before they hit “send”). Oops.
This isn’t the only tech headache Mr. Bush has suffered in recent days. With Saturn also in Sagittarius, serious consideration of the opinions we spout — with swift karmic consequences — can be expected. Just ask Justine Sacco, who made headlines last year when a “stupid Tweet blew up her life”. Her story can be read in this Sunday’s NYT magazine.
A friendly, techy connection to the Moon from Uranus around 1PM ET today, followed by an expansive connection to Jupiter at 6:07PM ET suggests a lighter vibe than yesterday. If you wake up itching for a fight tomorrow, you may be living out the potential of a combative connection between the Moon and aggressive Mars. See if you can channel that passion into something better suited for Valentine’s Day. However far out your exploration takes you is likely to be of no consequence , and sometimes that can be a good thing. The Moon goes void at 10:15AM ET, not to enter Capricorn until 5:24PM ET. Chill, avoid the malls and enjoy the wandering adventure.
Dinner with your Valentine on a night with Moon in Capricorn may not be the most romantic backdrop, but all of the props should be in place, as Capricorn strives to make things happen. Expect whatever is de rigueur. On the other hand, a meet-up between Venus and Mars in Pisces (exact next Sunday, but in effect now) suggests soulful passion. On the other hand, Pisces does refer to victimization, and Capricorn is a masterful user. You’re not really going to see That Movie, are you?
Sunday features a dreamy alignment between Moon and Neptune — lovely for lingering. If you’re using part of the holiday weekend to take care of practical chores, go for it in the afternoon, but be aware that the Moon makes its weekly clash with Uranus and Pluto between 4:30PM and 6PM ET, suggesting sudden jolts, power plays and other emotional charges. Monday’s patterns are lighter, and there’s another Moon void between 3:17PM and 7:13PM ET, after which Moon enters quirky, friendly Aquarius.
And now, the news.
And again, news is The News, courtesy of Saturn in Sagittarius (potential reality check for the media), challenged as it is now by Neptune in Pisces (visionaries, dreamers, frauds, victims, martyrs). First, we find out we’re losing our favorite fake newsman (Jon Stewart, whom we take more seriously than most real ones). Then our favorite real newsman turns out to be not-so-real and he’s out, too (Brian Williams, for at least six months). And then, on Wednesday, we lose a seriously real newsman, Bob Simon, whom you may know from CBS’s venerable 60 Minutes.
Mr. Simon was killed in an accident. The driver of his Town Car hit another car that was stopped at a light. I looked at the chart for the time of the accident: Saturn and Neptune are exactly on the angles of the chart, suggesting confusion, with grave consequences. Freaky. And there’s more: on Thursday night’s heavy meet-up between the Moon and Saturn, highly respected NYT columnist David Carr — whose beat was the media (Sagittarius!) — suddenly passed away. Mr. Carr’s own life story has plenty of shades of Neptune (addiction & redemption) and Saturn (authority, gravitas). Two tributes published today are well worth the read: here and here. The writing is beautiful.
Briefly — because I’d like to get this posted by 9AM ET — an update on President Obama’s horoscope and how recent actions reflected the expansive reach suggested by last week’s 17 degree Aquarius Sun-Jupiter in Leo opposition. You will note that the President’s Ascendant is 18 Aquarius. We noted months ago that he was likely to be “at the top of his game” with transiting Saturn at the top of his chart in Nov-Dec 2014 (surprise, surprise — but not to astrologers)…and again this summer. We should also note that transiting Saturn in Sagittarius has just made the first of three oppositions to his 3 Gemini Moon, reinforcing a need for ambition and advance. Right after that Sun-Jupiter opposition, the President asked Congress for “expansive authorization to combat ISIL”
Oh, there is so much more to report. But let’s stop for now and end on a horizon-expanding story about how, like humans, plants are all connected, too– but by an underground network of fungus. It’s really neat.
