Thursday 1/2/2020: Happy New Year; Tribute to a Giant Among Men

…and a very happy New Year to you!

(tried to send this out much, much earlier in the day — MailChimp would not cooperate)

I don’t know about you, but I love this time of the year when we aren’t necessarily expected to be at our desks or at home. The break in the inexorable forward march of deadlines creates space to breathe, rest – or tend to projects you’ve had to place on the back burner. One of those “back burner” projects seems to include checking in with your local astrologer. I’ve been booked solid during the holidaze, but I haven’t heard from everyone, and there’s time available over the next few weeks. Seize the day! With 67 planets now in Capricorn, it’s time to plan your strategy for Getting Stuff Done.

We started 2020 with the Moon in Pisces, flowing gently down a stream of feelings and ideals, supported by easy connections among Saturn-Pluto and Mars. Moon went void at 9:14 PM ET (on Wednesday night),  an hour into my experience of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. I got misty-eyed at the sight of Carrie Fisher and the scene between Harrison Ford and Adam Driver as Han Solo and Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. I could see Mark Hamill having a good old time chewing up the scenery in his bit with Daisy Ridley as Rey. Just glancing at them now, Ford’s horoscope is the one with the most developmental tension, with his 20 Cancer Sun about to be eclipsed, along with his 22 Cancer Moon about to be opposed by Saturn and Pluto on January 10th – 12th. A significant development in matters of home, family and public status is likely in the wings — and we can watch for news in mid-March.

At 11 PM ET last night, Moon entered Aries, where it is now driving the day with a need to get things started before anyone else does. Summon your courage and take the initiative on the Big Idea that is symbolized by mental Mercury’s meet-up with expansive Jupiter at 11:42 AM ET. It’s the only exact pattern among the planets for the rest of the week, except for the Moon. Your challenge is to choose which one of many options best deserves your focus, as Beth Owl’s Daughter’s ever-in-sync Tarot Card of the Week suggests. There you will find helpful advice on how to spend the first day of the New Year — to be saved for reference on January 1, 2021.

The First Quarter Moon — a challenge between the impulsive Aries Moon and the Sun in Establishment Capricorn — will be exact at 11:45 PM ET. A hard aspect between the Sun and Moon suggests crisis or conflict, and remember that the Lean, Mean Meet-Up of Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn is humming in the background, coloring the expression of all other planetary patterns — for better or for worse.  Saturn refers to structure, limits, discipline, ambition, time and necessary controls. It functions effectively in Capricorn, the sign it rules. Capricorn refers to governments and corporations. Pluto refers to extremes, power, resources, news from underground, breakdown and decay and transformation. Watch the headlines for Big News. (I wrote that before noon today — and as of 9:44 PM ET, the headlines are indeed Big and Heavy, involving extreme efforts at corporate/governmental control: as you can see here  and here  and here and here).

But I digress.

  • FRIDAY brings another planetary shift, as Mars leaves Scorpio for Sagittarius, where it hasn’t been since January 2018. In Sagittarius, Mars suggests a need for high-flying and righteously opinionated action, pushing boundaries as it goes. Mars will be in Sagittarius until February 16th. The Aries Moon goes void at 8:18 PM ET, squared by Saturn and Pluto. There’s strong potential for an intense Friday afternoon news dump. Chill during the void; Moon enters Taurus on…
  • SATURDAY…at 11:15 AM ET. A Taurus Moon seeks material comfort and stability, so do something that supports your personal status quo. Note the potential for a surprise or an upset around 4:31 PM ET, when the Moon meets up with rebel Uranus.
  • SUNDAY — is a lovely day for the Taurus Moon, supported by a harmony among Mercury, Sun and Neptune throughout the day. Enjoy.

Meanwhile, if your horoscope was personally activated by the December 26th eclipse, I expect you received a bit of significant news close to December 31st. I appreciate the interest many of you have in learning about eclipses and how they activate the horoscope — and I am still offering a few paragraphs of personal insight on how yours is likely to be affected by the last one and the January 10th lunar eclipse. Toss $44 into my Cosmic Tip Jar as an expression of Joyful Random Appreciation and email me your birth data, if I do not already have it.

Meanwhile, my horoscope was activated by the solar eclipse and thus I was prepared to receive the sad, irreversible news that my dear teacher Noel Tyl peacefully transitioned at 11:11 AM MT on December 31st, his 83rd birthday. Here is his horoscope.

I met Noel at an ISAR astrology conference in 2009 and immediately enrolled in his Masters Course for Professional Astrologers. It took me two and a half years to finish it — and it was more demanding than any course I took at Wellesley (with the possible exception of Symbolic Logic). Harvard-educated and author of over 30 books, Noel was a giant — intellectually and on stage — 6’10” tall! Before he became a full-time astrologer, he was a formidable player in the opera world, and you can hear his booming bass baritone as Wotan here — courtesy of the Seattle Opera.

Noel will be forever remembered for his brilliant, humanistic and ruthlessly efficient approach to modern psychological astrology — and is destined to live on through the scores of astrologers who were fortunate to have him for a teacher. I am eternally grateful and humbled. He leaves behind a pair of ginormous shoes to fill.

So, like that.

It’s going to be an intensely rewarding year for those who are willing to work for it.

To be continued….and meanwhile….

…thank you for reading this forecast.
